Does anyone hear use/know anyone using 1.5Tb+ USB hard drives with a 360?

I have just ordered a Western Digital 1.5Tb My Book Essentials, with the intention of using it to store movies for my XBox 360.

Naturally it will be formatted to FAT32 and any movies over 4Gb will be split in two on it. I want to be able to use USB connection as well as network share, so I can turn my PC off whilst watching films.

I have found a piece of software that can reformat FAT32 up to 2Tb, but have heard mixed success stories of people using such big hard drives to store movies for the 360 - perhaps due to a RAID configuration inside them.

Does anyone here own or know of someone using a 1.5Tb or larger hard drive to store movies over USB for their XBox 360?

MS limit fat32 filesystem partitions to 32GB in their OS's for performance reasons. Turns out FAT does not scale too well.

Its technically possible to create larger partition sizes but the performance gets disproportionately worse the larger the FAT partition.

Just a question, where is your 360 in relation to your pc?

It will sit where my existing 300Gb hard drive sits - on my desk, under my PC monitor and a couple of metres from my 360.

I was using a 5m USB cable to connect my existing 300Gb hard drive to the 360 last night and I watched a very high quality 720p 5.1 copy of GI Joe, which worked perfectly.

I plan to do the same if I can with this hard drive.

Network share also works, but the beauty of USB is I can turn my PC off.

If anyone knows of anyone using a 1.5Tb or larger HD with their 360 please let me know!

ARGH! I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN!

I'm sorry, but every single post I have made recently gets filled with people giving me utterly irreleveant, sidetracking ideas. There has been some good advice in various posts, for which I am appreciative - but HOW do you think it could POSSIBLY help me to tell me to use a PS3 or my PC monitor?!

"You know what, actually I hadn't thought of using the LCD monitor I am currently typing this message on to watch my movies!"

or "Wow! Actually why don't I throw my XBox 360 in the bin and go out and buy a PS3, which none of my friends use and which will not work with my Logitech remote, just so I can watch movies slightly more easily with media server!"

I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma with perfectly adjusted 5.1 surround sound and a Logitech Harmony that controls the 360 perfectly. This is VASTLY superior to my 22" LCD monitor.

If I wanted alternative ideas, I would have asked.

I just asked a SIMPLE QUESTION:

'Does anyone know of anyone using 1.5Tb hard drives with a 360'

Thanks.

First of all calm the **** down!!! and secondly in answer to your original question....NO i dont know anyone who uses a 1.5tb hard drive with a 360.

360 can't see partitions other than the main one so that isn't a solution.

I can feel the love from here.

Cool, thanks guys.

Nothing personal, that message was meant to be flippant, not nasty - but suggestionsat tangents don't help!

And I would rather not partion the hard drive into many pieces, but will consider it.

Will report back when it arrives tomorrow, cheers.

Well that's the last time I offer any advice to you.

And you can use PS3 Media Server with an Xbox, moron.

I don't.

Yes but PS3 server would also require my PC to be on.

My PC works perfectly for streaming doing network share - I just want to be able to switch to a USB connection occassionally so I can watch movies with my PC off, as it makes quite a lot of noise.

Your welcome.

Now go back, and re-read my post then please show me the part where I said use your monitor? I meant send your AV signal from your PC to your TV/Amp, as an alternative suggestion to what you are currently doing as it may give you the results your after. I'd be right in thinking you PC is quieter than you 360 wouldn't I ;)?

On top of that you will be able to watch Iplayer, youtube and any other internet streaming content on you massive TV

In fairness, I did not explain why I don't use my VGA output.

It looks much worse than my 360 for some reason. I figure my 7600GT will never look as good as an XBox 360's dedicated graphics card.

Perhaps a new graphics card would help, but I much prefer using the 360 interface - and the Logitech Harmony Remote is brilliant for controlling movies within the 360.

Also, the PC is a lot louder than my 360. My 360 makes a little noise with a DVD, but hardly any without - so using the 360 is a much better option all round.

I tried using my current 300Gb hard drive last night with USB and my PC off. It was brilliant - if I paused it was almost complete silence!

Sorry if I was an *******, but I've spent many hours trying to find out if the second hard drive I have ordered is going to work - and what formatting to try when it arrives - and am struggling!

Yes, but that will make it HFS+, which (from what I understand) is not easily used by Windows.

I have stuff like all my 'my music' and 'my videos' folders redirected to the portable hard drive, as well as automatic syncing for Zune etc. so need full compatibility.

My current 300Gb does all the things I have listed perfectly - I don't see why wanting to swap it for a much bigger hard drive means I need to cut my own testicles off with a spoon and post them to microsoft.

HFS+ is the only way to go. When i bothered to use a 500GB external with the 360 that was the only way to get 4GB+ files to be read by the 360. You also need macdrive installed on all PC's you want to be able to see the drive or transfer films from.

It only takes a few mins to set up and is well worth the hassle if the 360 is the only way you have to watch films.

I have sinced moved from 360 ---> PS3 (due to mkvs being more readily available and easier to convert) ------> Acer Revo (soon) (theres a useless bit of information for you Mr Holland!!)
