Which performance estate under £10k?

Spoke sense then TW but then ruined it with your usual pro bwm dribble! :D

What? How on earth is that pro BMW drivel, I just advised you not to buy one because its a load of hassle. How in a month of Sundays is that 'Pro BMW drivel'?

I actually took the time to write out a rational, sensible and useful reply for you taking into account your exact requirements and STILL you felt the need to post false tripe?

You did and i thank you for it sir. :p

Exactly, better than most of the other replies recommending you buy a car thats over 5 years old with an enormous engine simply because its what they'd do in your circumstances...

Way too much E39 love in this thread. Seriously I love them but the E39 5 Series is rarely the answer to 'spec me a £10,000 car to cart some dogs around in without daft running costs'.

BMW X5 3.0D, it'll be getting on a bit, it'll cost lots to run, i.e. to replace the tyres will require you to re-mortgage your house, the cooling system will blow up and it might eat it’s own gearbox as it get over about 125k ...but otherwise it's a nice car, loads of usable space, high driving position so one can lord it over the great unwashed and decent performance ...but wont hurt you too much at the pumps.

On the other hand if you’d be happy in any kind of Peugeot or Vauxhall (VXR's accepted), don’t by a BMW, it isn’t the car for you.

You say all the 5's have galactic mileage, I beg to differ, while they are getting on a bit I have seen a number of tourings with circa 80k mileage, this is not even close to galactic, indeed for the age of the car it's pretty much what you would expect.

Here is a nice example, it's got a pretty naff spec and it's expensive, but it's looks like one of the best example you will find these days, it's for sale only 2 miles from me, I thoguht about looking at it myself, but it wasn't what I was looking for. It has one of the best interior colour combos I have seen in a 5 series too.

Whilst i thank you for your input, thats a touch below the 30mpg limit i'd like!

The oil burner, err around town yea, but mixed driving and motorway should see 30+. It's a silly suggestion anyway, it'd cost you a small fortune to run an 'old' X5.

Has anyone seen the boot space in the cars i have mentioned? I havent, but i indend too. Just if you dont think two big dogs would be ok there, then i wont waste the time going to view them.

Moeks the car you linked to was a 530i Sport Auto. The only time thats going to be the happy side of 30mpg is on a particularly long Motorway run.

Mondeo Estate is pretty huge. Zafira isnt that big because its party peice is lots of seats not loads of space. Accord is pretty large as well.

The Accord's fairly massive from what I saw when we were looking at them

Whilst i wouldnt say no to an X5 or a Range Rover, i think the high running costs would take there toll, after all we're also trying to move to a bigger house.

Oh that one yea, well that wasn't my suggestion actually, just an example of a nice one with sub-galactic millage.

What's a mile per gallon anyway? ...who looks at those :p

How about A6 Avant (not exactly a serious suggestion :p), although to be quite honest I don't see why something like a Mondeo Estate won't do.

The OP blatantly doesn't want performance (not what motors would call performance anyway) he wants MPG and boot space.

RR doesn't have enough boot space to be honest. It may be high but it really isn't that great an amount of space in the back.

I've only seen the zafira off the ones on your list, and fitting two ridgebacks in the boot of one would be about the same level of comfort a typical sardine has once canned.

oh come on you can get 2 litre turbos that will give you ~30mpg!

fair enough. I know someone with a mavira and two ridgebacks, imagine how they feel!

2.0T what? Diesel, Petrol?

You seem to be confusing MPG with performance, generally speaking, performance is fast cars regardless of fuel consumption.

petrol, got 29mpg out of a 2.0T petrol, infact that was a 280bhp. I'd consider that performace, maybe you dont....
and the other "performace" car i had, i got about 27mpg, and that was a 230bhp 1.6T.
