This tbh. I've had a 450D for nearly 2 years. I dont see how this or the 500D would help me take any better photographs.

For those entering the DSLR market, or switching over to Canon - this does look like a very capable first body. I think the kit is £799 or something. I wonder what the price will settle to after a few months though.

I am also really struggling to see how they will add value to the xxD "60D" now? What will it's features be above this, without stepping on the 7D's toes?? Focus micro adjust, and higher continuous shooting rate? Hmmmm...

For £800* I would much prefer to (and did) 'upgrade' to a 5D Mk I. Older technology, but in my opinion, much much more bang for buck.

* My 5D cost less than £800
 
Anyone wanting to get into dslr, this seems a very good start tho could be a bit pricey at the beginning.
 
Very expensive for an entry camera IMO, however if all these RRP from previous series, I'd safely say the price would drop down to a more meaningful 600ish if not cheaper from other import sites.

BTW, I still don't get why camera companies are insisting on Movie mode on a DSLR - good marketing I suppose.
 
I don't know, while the metering zones, resolving power, movie mode and ISO expansion is pretty beefy I just could not have the small buffer and framerate - give me the 7.8fps of my 40D with the 550Ds movie features and we're talking :D

DSLR movie modes are great because you get the dof and control that gives videos a film like quality - something point and shoot cams can't get. Heck not many video camcorders that are 1080p can get as good a result without a proper lens like on a DSLR,
 
It was only a matter of time until they put the 7D sensor into a XXX body just like they did with the 50D into the 500D. I really hope their new range of cameras would focus more on image quality and high ISO noise control than keep beefing up the megapixel to please the 'my camera has more megapixel than yours' crew.

RRP is ridicuously high once again, 500D came out at £999 including kit lens and it was down to £600 within weeks of launch. I could see the same happening to the 550D.

Its not really expensive, youre getting equiv specs to the 7D, apart it only has one DiGiC4 processor rather then two which is probably why the price is a tad cheaper compared to the 7D.

Movie modes on DLSR is a good thing in most cases if you know how to utilize what you have and to use it creatively.
 
I got my 500d at christmas because it shot video as well as stills (I'm a videographer by profession) the reason so many of us are jumping to DSLR's from video cameras is quite simply for the lenses you can use. The DOF that can be achieved and the excellent low light handling means that for a relativley small cost we can nail that 'film' look that we just couldn't afford in the past or had to cheat with pricey 35mm adapters from letus, brevis etc. You also get the bonus of being able to shoot stills on set with the same body/lens combo that you shot your video with which can be a huge advantage.

This is why Canon offer video in thier DSLR's and it's taking off in a big way, I will be attending the Broadcast video expo this month to view the wealth of rigs, follow focus systems and other accesories available for these cameras and also to see what response the major video camera manufacturers will have.

With the 500d/550d Canon will capture people like me hunting the film look on a budget and the photographers that are starting to experiment with video without having to move away from the controls and bodys that they are used to.
Even at £800 this is a very good package for those of us that may have been looking at the 7D. Needless to say I may be sticking my 500D up for sale in the coming months and I wouldn't be surprised to see others do the same.

The DiGiC4 processor is in the 500D too isnt it? Its just an increase in megapixels.
I dont think this is such a big jump in performance over the 500D unless you like taking HD video.
 
as soon as it comes down to £600 ill be all over it!

my 400d is needing an upgrade and the 550d is where its at.

Yea but what Im saying is, its comparable to the 7D apart from the 550D doesnt have TWO Digic4 chips like the 7D does which it can do 8fps compared to the 3.9fps
 
Price is rumoured to be $799 for body only, which is just over £500.

I am considering the 550D over the 7D as I am after the video features first and foremost. For stills I have my 20D.
