PS3 Dolby Headphone

MixAmps seem to be out of UK stock now for at least two weeks. I tempted to import the MkII version which seems to support 7.1 in, in addition to the usb soundcard.

I don't have much of a reference for headphones, but I'm quite pleased with my new AD700's. They seem to be well suited to dual use music and gaming.

After all this have got the Logitech x-230 for speakers will need to get the mix amp for my 555s at a later point hopefully when the price falls to something reasonable.

Not much chance of that Astro won't sell to anyone who undercuts their own prices from what I can gather. It would really need some direct competitors to emerge.

True, so the techies need to get working on some competition, I know the need is minimal but at least 1 or 2 competitors would be nice eh.

Anyone bought the whole system? Seems a good deal to me, and they offer a 14 day no hassle return service.

Worth a punt? Never heard dolby headphones before but seems a great idea.

Edit: Also does it matter about the quality of a toslink switcher? I.e does it reduce audio quality, rather than switching cables manually?

ace, that's what I was thinking. Had to check though.

Edit: Does it take any 5.1 source and make it dolby headphone? I.E Half life 2 set to 5.1 speaker set up in options = 5.1 dolby headphones?

Yeah i'm pretty sure thats what it does

So annoying, i know all the reviews say the A40 is wortht he £100 but i just cant bring myself to spend it :(

Seriously considering buying the mixamp and the headphones to use both with 360 and PS3. Will I just need to switch from one toslink cable to another to hear each one or will I have to swap usb cables aswell? If so will need to think of the tidiest and easiest way to do this.

Well the USB just provides the power, so you'll need to switch the USB cable to whatever console is running at the time

Better to run it off batteries for neatness on the 360 plus it picks up noise via the 360 USB apparently. On the PS3 for voice with the Mk1 MixAmp you need a USB soundcard and the Mk2 would need to be connected to the USB for its internal soundcard.

I would like to know the USB PC/PS3 Soundcard quality in the new version. It would seem a bit steep if they have basically integrated the card from what is a £7 accessory for the PS3.

Mine doesn't pick up any noise running off USB I know some have complained of this.....maybe an old revision. Sound quality on the MK2 is the same. Its just the ps3 compatibility and the Mk2 has slightly cheaper feeling pots/knobs.

Cheers for the up to date info. I still can't make my mind up over the Mk1/Mk2 as the UK ETA stock dates slip again (one due today). Whilst it gets closer to March when the Mk2 should be officially available in the UK.

I assume the Mk2 will be £130 since its $130 as you say the decoding is the same except for 7.1 support although its not in many PC games. It's the internal PC sound card quality I'm wondering about, is it just a token gesture (overpriced? [like the rest of it]).

I don't know about the 7.1 but I've spoken to astro reps & on their forums and the internals have received no updates. Its just purely cosmetic with nothing new under the hood.

If I was buying again I'd try and grab a mk1 now. After using them side by side the mk2 feels cheaper to me (the knobs). and yes it seems it will be £30 more. My friend imported one which is why I got to test them side by side. The revision seems to be mainly about cost saving as is usually the case.
