Any one ever used these guys?
The wifes car needs a new clutch (Obviously!). I rang Mr Clutch and got a quote for £220 all in, then I rang a Toyota Dealer and they quoted £670.

Am I missing something here as to why Mr clutch is so cheap?

To put it in a bit of perspective, the car only needs to last about another year / 18 months max as we will be selling up and leaving the country, so if the cheaper one is going to last that long, then that is really all I need it to do.

Cheers

Google "Mr Clutch" and scroll down a bit.

I remember reading bad reports in the past of a company, think it was the same but not sure but looks like it.

Anyway, my advice would be to find a clutch online or from a dealer to buy (not fitted) and then find a recommended local indy and see what they will charge to supply & fit or fit only then weigh it up.

"Mr Clutch" don't have a good reputation, which is odd, if your taking gearboxes out all day everyday you would expect them to have perfected it by now.

The reason for the price difference is you are probably getting a non genuine clutch and not paying £70 an hour or whatever for Toyotas new apprentice to be let loose on your car with some spanners.

Cheers guys, I hadn't scrolled down that far when I was searching.
Will try an indy and see what they say.

a guy a work with had a prelude and took it to MR CLUTCH for a clutch. the jack they used to lift the car almost went through the floor

the clutch lasted 7k miles or so. they claimed they used reconditioned clutches or something daft

Don't go with them but use their price as a bargaining tool with other car fixing people. I found F1 autocentres to be great with my old MG and have a very keen price match policy.

They were fine when i used them when the clutch in my clio went. They quoted well under half of what the local indies we phoned wanted, and the indies wouldnt touch them on price.

Most if not all national outfits like this charge so little for labour because they have all the mechanics who were not smart enough to be mechanics, so instead the masquerade as "fitters".

If it all goes smoothly, and the car is simple enough, they could probably fit a clutch, but what if something else is wrong? Preventing them from doing the job the usual way, can they work out how to fix it? This is where a technician distinguishes himself from a fitter.

The Mr Clutch price promise makes me laugh...

"The Mr Clutch Price Promise...
If you can find any written clutch quote cheaper, for the equivalent quality parts, with the same warranty, terms and conditions, within 14 days of your clutch replacement, we will refund you the difference plus another 5% of the difference!"

I think that could be the most meaningless guarantee ever! More holes than Swiss cheese :D

exactly. from your posts i think youve worked on cars a fair bit, right? every car has their own "know hows" and "how tos" etc. ie i know the bits the make golf ones awkward, you probably know the same about alfa ones.... how does anyone ever expect them to know that about every car there is going?

buy your own clutch from a motorfactor, find a local independant to fit... win.. and laugh at mr clutch and toyota.

i bought blueprint clutch and got toyotech to fit it for me, cost me about £200 all inc ...

I thought Mr Clutch was considered good?

Why would you think that? They are essentialy 'Kwik Fit' for clutches; the people that work there are tasked with the job of getting the old clutch out of your car and a reconditioned clutch back in it in as little time as possible. Do you think that bodes well for a quality repair?

As opposed to a regular mechanic who savours a clutch change and gets real pleasure from lubeing up the parts and executing a fastidious clutch change operation?

They all do it as quickly as possible to make the maximum amount of money. It just happens that Mr Clutch seem to have employed a rather high percentage of morons, the likes of which are usually bound to Kwik Fit.

Lol, the first sentence you wrote made me chuckle, thanks for that ...my first proper laugh today :D ...you're probably right though in what you say, I'd rather have someone competent doing it as quickly as he could than a moron though.

And much like Kwik Fit, I think the moron count is high with this outfit.

an individual has his professional reputation and the reputation of his workshop to uphold and potentially consider the lifetime value of keeping that customer happy..

mr clutch knows its customers are desperate last stop shop types who they will probably never (hopefully) have to see again...?

I think to be honest it really does depend on the car, my clio was going to cost £600 at all the local indies we phoned to fit a new clutch, as they were quoting around £200 for parts and then 8 hours labour.

Mr Clutch wanted £200, came with a warranty for 20k miles where they will replace it as long as i got back for checkups on it every 3k. Seeing as i am not planning to keep the car more than the 20k of the warranty they seemed a better option, and the fact it saved me £400 on an indy.

What a worthless warranty. It's obviously just there so that they can say they offer one. Can you imagine if someone like Jez or Housey or one of the other members doing a billion miles a week going there? They'd have to stop by on the way home each night!
