Hi

On my last post asking you guys to recommend me a car someone suggested the Nissan Almera 1.4. (my budget was £1k max).

I do about 7 miles a day to & from work, however there will be days when I'll need to take a trip up to London (100 miles), or further and will also use it to go see friends etc. on weekends. I'm looking for something good on petrol & comfortable (unlike my current car).

I really like the look of the Nissan Almera - anyone else got any comments on it? Any other suggestions on nice cars?

I'll be moving from a borrowed Kia Pride (good riddance). I hate it so I don't want anything like that :p

Thanks
Craig.

What about it do you like the look of? I can't imagine a more depressing proposition than a 1.4 Almera

Really nasty interior, ride and comfort are crap. They won't ever die though, even if you wish it would

Well, I should say I like the sound of the Nissan Almera. From what Duroxis and other people have said below & from what I've read they're very good cars. Maybe not the most comfortable or the best looking, but a hell of a lot better than the Kia Pride I'm using.

Ride/comfort can't be nearly as bad as the Kia I'm using. Have to rev the hell out of it else it'll stall, if you haven't got enough petrol going and move your foot an inch it will stall, guaranteed. I have to open the window to open the drivers door (won't open from the inside), looks awful, and if I take it anywhere past 60 it'll start shaking and feels like it's going to fall apart. Much fun.

The car I'm getting would really be just to tide me over until I either get a brand new car, or save for something better as the Kia I'm using is borrowed and needs to go back in April.

If I did go for the Almera, what price should I be looking to spend? Anything I should look out for?

Any other suggestions for cars within my price range?

Pretty good prices on them. I assume the Xsara range is reliable & decent on petrol etc?

What are Almera 1.6s like, or even Xsara 1.6? Even a 1.8 isn't completely out of the question as the insurance isn't too much more, just depends on how much petrol they'd take.

Dont make the mistake of thinking a crap car - in this case a Nissan Almera - is anything other than crap simply because its better than a really crap car - in this case a Kia Pride.

It's like going and buying an old Radeon 9700 Pro because its better than a GeForce2 MX.

Really, a lot of the issues you suggest with the current car are going to be there in a 1.4 Almera!

Xsaras arent the last word in reliability, but they're cheap to fix when they do go wrong. The engines are pretty crude, but they work..

Do a search for almera timing chain stretch on google, it will put you off for sure, thats if the 1.4 was an engine that suffered?

My mother was left with a 800 pound bill from nissan.

Exactly the same could be said of Xsaras. A Mondeo would be my choice at this price but I'd pick an Almera over a Xsara as though the interior is crap it' still better than a Xsara, and though it's duller to drive they're more reliable.

Xsara is a good shout. Could get a VTS well in budget if you're that way inclined :) Otherwise, there's the Mondeo. Not sure I've seen that mentioned often here.

I'll take a look at some Mondeos (going on weekend to have a look around), but I really hate the older model. Not sure why, but I hate it :p

I'm guessing the problem JAMAL mentioned doesn't exist on the Almera 1.4?

Surely if I'm spending £1k on an Almera, or something else in that price range it won't have stupid little problems like having to open the door from the outside, and having to rev the hell out of the engine to get it going?

Forgot to say, the Kia Pride was bought for £250...

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, I'll be taking a list of the cars recommended with me this weekend when I go hunting. I'll have to have a sit in a few of them and see what I like best.

Craig.
