Moon (2009) [Spoilers]

Just watched this after hearing about it on these forums a couple of weeks ago. Had not heard of it!

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. I'm not quite sure why people are saying they couldn't empathise with the character. Don't you want the guy to escape back to earth and spill the beans?:)

Couple of issues for me that didn't spoil the film, let me know your thoughts -

1. Wasn't quite sure why the radio towers/jammers existed. If the clones were planned in from the start of the mining operation, then the entire lifespan of each clone would just consist of be a series of prerecorded messages (which I guess it does already considering his wifes dead etc) without the facilities needing to be in place that require them to communicate with the outside world.

2. Why didn't the newly awakened clones question why they were 'asleep'? It seems they just wake up, in the medical bay, and then start their 3 year, pre-programmed routine.

Anyone got any similar film recommendations? I love this kind of stuff. Have seen solaris...

I think there may have been some messages that were real, the communications with control possibly. They weren't live messages, but they were responses to messages that the clones had sent.

I believe that they were told there was a problem when they were landing on the moon, and that they had been taken to the infirmary for that reason.

Yeah, there was still a need to communicate with the base in case of special circumstances, and the "rescue" team would have needed some way to contact home.

.

They.............................. do.

Its one of the key points in the plot.

How did you miss it?!?:p

QUOTE]

As soon as the new clone wakes up and asks where he is or whats happened..

the robot simply replies that there was a minor accident and theres nothing to worry about..

I liked Moon but there were a few things that irked me.

1) The issue of cloning didn't seem to be an issue.
2) The robot seemed to be either obtuse and difficult or fall over itself to help.
3) The first clone is clearly falling apart yet the new clone didn't really seem a care too much that its mirror image was dying.

Yeah I got that part;) But the robot just fobs them off and they accept it.

I was also hoping that when the rescue team opened the crashed vehicle, sam opened his eyes and gave them a surprise;)

1) The issue of cloning didn't seem to be an issue.
An issue for who? The clones? I can't say I found their lack of surprise that cloning was even possible to be an issue. I just went along with their inability to deal with the reality of the situation.

2) The robot seemed to be either obtuse and difficult or fall over itself to help.
I thought that fitted in quite nicely with the mood of the film, but I'd agree that the change wasn't handled with the same delicate touch evident elsewhere in the film.

3) The first clone is clearly falling apart yet the new clone didn't really seem a care too much that its mirror image was dying.
I assumed that the new Sam understood that the old Sam was reaching the end of his lifespan, but you couldn't exactly say that one didn't care for the other. There were a few moments of genuine empathy shown between the two clones.

Yeah I got that part;) But the robot just fobs them off and they accept it.
Why would you not accept it? Conventional wisdom of the day would seem to be that cloning isn't possible and you are the sole human being on the moon.

And given that all the clones are of the same person, I'd imagine they all share the same personality traits. Perhaps referring to an unseen accident is all that's needed to persuade 'Sam' the reason behind him awakening in the infirmary.

1) The issue of cloning didn't seem to be an issue.

An issue? The issue was quite well handled I think - both the clones were quite uneasy upon first seeing "their" clone (in fact, I think they were both under the impression they were seeing things initially). When they later found the vault with all the other clones it definitely affected them. They probably didn't talk about it too much as it would lead to discussion of their own limited lifespan.

2) The robot seemed to be either obtuse and difficult or fall over itself to help.

I think the robot was trying to follow the orders it had been given. When it hadn't specifically been given an order, it was able to help him/them.

3) The first clone is clearly falling apart yet the new clone didn't really seem a care too much that its mirror image was dying.

I think he did care quite a bit - there wasn't a huge amount of discussion about it, but he definitely empathised with the other clone. You can tell that by a lot of the facial expressions and the general way he acted towards the clone.

I watched this again, stunning film.

I think in a fair few years this will be up there with 2001:, in regards to classic Science fiction.

amazing film, such a good return of classic sci fi, instead of all the cgi crap we have suffered with for years

Was so glad Ducan Jones won a Bafta for it

Such a shame it didnt get a wider release at the cinema

I watched it again the other day. Amazing.

Outstanding performance from Sam in this film, Gerty is very creepy to start with, thanks to Kevin Spacey and his voice acting, which was top notch.

I rate this as up there with 2001, outstanding peice of Science Fiction, Really moving and thought provoking film, brilliant.

It was shot in 33 days :o

Kevin Spacey recorded everything in half a day :o

Yeah, I thought GERTY was a great character.

Kevin Spaceys voice is really quite scary at times, because I too got the sense that this could be another HAL.

I very much enjoyed it, the two Sams were different but I liked them both, I thought it had a good ending, what do you think happened when they found out about the cloning on Earth? because the Original Sam was back home, and there had being a total of 15 years since he returned (afaik) ! argh I could go on for hours about this film.

Very much enjoyed it, think it will be mentioned in the same breath as 2001 in the not too distant future.

Ug. Was about to watch this the other day and my mate told me the ending. He thought I'd seen it already :(
Watch it anyway. The trailer I saw for it massively gave away the clone twist, but I still found it a good film, and to be fair, that part of the story isn't actually played with as much as you'd expect.

Finally watched this tonight, loved it.

Noticed a few things, the Sams were the 6th and 7th clones to be awoken as it was the 8th drawer that they opened in the vault which was the first one with a green light, all the ones before it were red.

Also the reason clones are used is that they are all shown as close to dying from radiation poisoning due to the time they've spent there, before they get sent "home".
