BF2 freezes on first try

The first time I try to play BF2 it freezes either when logging in or shortly afterwards. I have to force shutdown (hold down the power button on my laptop), it usually works OK on the second try

Before forcing shutdown I try ctrl+alt+del but the game remains in full screen mode, music keeps playing, the cursor still moves and changes appearance (from the game's cursor icon to XP's cursor icon) presumably when it's over the part of the screen that's trying to display the task manager (I hope that makes sense) but I, obviously, I can't see it.

Is there anything else I can do other than force shutdown to fix this?

According to Driver Detective there are some out of date nvidia drivers. I installed the latest driver from nvidia's site but it's still saying some of them are outdated: nvidia network bus enumerator, nvidia nforce pci system management, nvidia nforce system management controller, standard enhanced pci to usb host controller and realtek hd audio. I'll try looking for them in the morning.

Is there a free program that'll find them for me?

Silly question, but did you update the Nforce or the Graphics driver from the Nvidia site?
Those items are part of the Nforce driver package.
