Does the T5 engine use oil at all ?

ive come from 2 previous cars that never used a drop of oil, but i know some engines like the one in rG-toms 330i burn it like theres no tomorrow but BMW say this is "normal"

only reason i mentioned it is that the oil level appears to be low on mine. It came on when i went up a slope yesterday. Went off again after i restarted it, but came on again today when i went on another slope.

Obviously needs topping up. Its done 5000 milles since it was serviced

Its got a 6 month warranty, if there is anything wrong it will be covered so im not worried about it being anything bigger.

I need to find a level surface to properly test the dipstick, our housing estate ( and my drive) is one giant slope so i'm going to have to go drive somewhere to do it.

Works car park is no better. thats not flat either !

Completely different engine, same car (essentially). My old man has the V60 D5 and it doesn't touch a drop. The fuel tank has leaked once though - 60 litres of diesel down the drive didn't do much for it!

Depends entirely on how its been driven over its life mate.

If its using a bit, perhaps, its not been too sympathetically treated - driven hard from cold etc

On the other hand, it may just be like that! - How many miles have you driven since you last checked the level?

I had an old e38 728i (M52 engine) which never used a drop in 28k of use, my Dads 528i (same M52) has done well over 260k and sometimes needs 1/2 litre between services, sometimes not! My own 328i (M52 again) seems to use a litre every 5000miles or so.

At work, some trucks use gallons of oil despite being relative low mileage yet some of the high mileage 07 reg ones seem to not use any......

Any smoke under hard acceleration? or cold startup?

I'd be inclined to keep checking the oil level daily (which I'm sure most people don't!) and top up as & when required.

My T4 engine which is pretty much the same as the T5 lump but with one cylinder lumped off didnt use any oil between the 6k oil changes I used to give it. They arent all the same though and as said above depends how its been treated as to how much it will use. A top up of oil after 5k miles isnt anything to worry about though.

My dad's V70 2.5 literally hasn't used a drop in 6 years.

How much does his use?

Honda allow 1l over 1000 miles to be acceptable on the K20 Type-R engines. Some used hardly any, mine used a lot. I did drive it hard however and I have no idea why owned it before me other than he was an older gentleman to took great care of it. It's just one of those things. I bought 5L of oil to topping up every year and checked it every month, £40 a year for piece of mind.

For the Volvo, I don't know anyone with a T5 but I'd be asking on an owners forum to see what other people are getting. It sounds like you're going off a warning light too? Might be worth seeing what it takes to set this feature off and of course, check your oil. Have you checked it since you bought it?

its done 5k miles so it will probably be due an oil change anyway.

I'll give it an oil change and monitor how much it uses.

Its just the vectras oil level didnt start to drop till just before it was due its service.

MOT was done august 09. MOT history on-line shows it passed 1st time.

Theres no smoke under acceleration, and its had a relatively easy 113k miles as it did them in only 4 years, so im not thinking the turbos gone yet.

Its just my previous cars didnt need the oil touching till service time, but there are plenty of healthy cars who need the oil topping up before that point.

Probably worth giving it an oil change, getting it up to MAX on dipstick and monitoring it from there, 5000 miles doesn't seem that unreasonable to have used some oil.

Also be worth getting someone to follow you to see if there's any puff of smoke when you come on boost, could well be oil seals.
