Paypal fraud and bank charges

A month or 2 ago 2 unauthorised transactions took place via paypal, taking nigh on £500 out of my bank account. This put me a few pounds into my unauthorised overdraft for half a day which has led to a £20 charge from Halifax.

Now, Paypal took over 7 days to pay this money back into my bank account (yet it was taken within from me 2 days of the Paypal transactions taking place). After half a dozen emails explaining my feelings about this (basically expressing that I don't feel I should be responsible for this charge) I've had no reply.

The first of these emails was sent weeks ago, straight after the event, the last of which a couple of days ago. What can I do now?

Speak to your bank and tell them about the fraud that took place on your account? That would have being my first phone call. They will not make you pay the fees. Have you told the bank?

Id hazard a guess you can get your charge refunded.

From Halifax? Good luck!

Exactly the same thing happened to me about 2 years ago (albeit a smaller amount) but Halifax started chasing me for £60 in charges. I explained that it was a fraudulant transaction through Paypal - do you want to know what their response was? "You will have to get Paypal to pay the £60 to us". No, I'm not joking. I refused to pay and now they want around £274 from me (after whacking on compound charges etc). I used to answer the calls from them and simply say "take me to court" but now I don't bother.

Ooof, thats pretty bad. Nationwide just told me to write them a letter, but I get a warm fuzzy feeling from them - like they value me and love me. Hah.

I told my bank about it straight away and Halifail told me I needed to take it up with Paypal. I might go back to the bank and tell them Paypal aren't cooperating to see what can be done.

For the sake of £20 it seems a little petty, kind of makes me want to just forget about it and not bother. But it's also the fact that I was down £500 with rent to pay, other bills and no overdraft because Paypal took so long returning the money to me. They can take the money out within 2 days, why can't they give it back that quickly!?

couldnt the bank just drop the charge out of kindness ? both lloyds and natwest have done this for me before when ive asked nicely

i reckon paypal will just argue forever that you should never of let anyone get/guess your password.

I had £1.4K taken from my Barclays account last week from paypal fraud, rang Barclays they immediately refunded it all and put a hold on all bank charges etc. Barclays are absolutely spot on IMHO.

The bank wont let you off with the charge.

Hound Paypal like there is no tomorrow and you Will get your money refunded off them as long as you can prove how much you were charged.

I find myself in the same situation today. I had a call from paypal a few days ago regarding a possible fraudulent transaction. I told them specifically on the phone i didn't make the transaction and to stop it from going through. Checked my paypal account straight afterwards, accounts been limited, so i changed my password and security question, and notice that the transaction is being reviewed. Seems ok i think, as surely they'll cancel it, seeing as i told them my account had been compromised on the phone.....Check my bank account today, and can see that the transaction has gone through, over £500 has been withdrawn and i'm now in the red which will also impose a charge from Barclays. I've just sent paypal a lengthy email, as i can't understand why they'd authorise the transaction after what i told them.

If i do get my money back from paypal, i'm assuming as it's physically left my account, the money will come out of paypal's pocket, as my cash will now be with whoever done the fraudulent transaction, and they would have probably transferred that cash somewhere else where paypal can't touch it!?

If you want the charges written off then the fraud will generally need to be investigated by your bank so they can confirm fraud, if you did it through paypal the bank have no proof it was fraud so won't even consider your charges. Halifax have a one charge a year refunded goodwill policy though, however they've changed instant overdraft fees to a daily fee now so its a fiver per day you're overdrawn so I'm not so sure how they work anymore since I ditched them for A&L.

Makes me wonder why my bank account is tied to paypal.

you can transfer money to your bank without tieing it as i did it a few weeks ago which suprised me at the time because before that i had it tied but removed it.

if you want to buy anything via paypal use a credit card

Paypal make me so angry, they only protect buyers. I have been ripped off by people before when selling and then the childish idiots just put it as unorthorisd transaction and paypal give them the money back.
