Help me tweak my PC for an old game.

Now before you laugh this is the game I am playing. It's an online only game and the faster you are on the game the better you are. Also happens to be my favourite game of all time and I've been playing it on and off for 8 years.

As you can see the game is not a very graphically intense game I believe the game is directx 7. However it has been common in this game for people to run windows xp and update their computer device to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and this seems to give a great boost in performance/speed. I tried going back to WinXP but had issues once changing to ACPI (PC just crashed) so want to stay on Win7.

Now I run windows 7 on the below
EX58-UD5 Intel X58 || [email protected]
Patriot Viper 6GB DDR3 1600MHz || OCZ Agility 60GB SSD
HP LP2475w 24" || XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 XT 1024MB Crossfire

And people with hardware half as good as mine as faster than me (so fast that I can't even hit them and this isn't down to connection as I get a better ping to the server than some of these people)

Now someone has said the below and well I am a bit stuck now, not sure what tweaks I can use/not use to try and help. Any sort of direct x tweaks?

Here are a few things that have been said - I asked about trying a RAM disk for this
You could use SSD in RAID 0 x88 you won't see much increase in performance since one the graphics are loaded into memory the handles for files are stored in your RAM.
The Data Folder is instantly loaded up into handles even if they are not even used.
The Graphic Folder is dymanically loaded up (only loaded when the files have being viewed ingame) after that they are kept and stored in RAM.
What's main thing Gamers love to have... High FPS!
What's effects FPS mostly (software side..) it's DirectX
Go through list of your options e.g. does mir use AA? etc etc
Before anyone posts "APCI" no they are better tweaks to replace APCI which do NOT turn off all cores

So any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

Looks like its just unoptimised code from my PoV for you current hardware.
I have an overkill PC for WoW but get half the FPS as probably most WoW players.

Although i never played this game, nor have tried to run anything that old on Win7 yet, so hopefully someone else can help you a tad more.

What Win7 version are you using? As Professional and ultimate have XP mode, which could work im guessing?

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. Didn't get the one with Windows XP virtual machine. It doesn't run the same in the virtual machine due to you not being able to change the comp device to the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI).

Thanks though mate! I know the feeling built this PC to play another game and ended up back playing this lol.

No offense, but I have a hard time beleiving that your problems are related to CPU performance. I seem to remember playing that game a long time ago on some really crap PCs. ACPI shouldn't have any influence on performance in Window 7 IMO, it will be configured correctly by default.

First of all I would suggest running HwMonitor in the background and seeing what it says about CPU usage history. If the game really is eating 100% of one of the cores then it's got some serious problems.

Most likely it's a network related problem or some cheat/hack people are running.

Hi mate. I have no idea. I just also remember running this in the past and using ACPI (Not the one which says ACPI the one which has Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC in the driver part of the device) when I had an inferior system and becoming faster than most people who had much better hardware. That's the thing in Windows7 you cant change the device bit its just what it is - think its ACPI 64 Multi PC or something.

I doubt very much also it would be eating 100% of any of the cores either.

Not network related and some may be using a cheat/hack but some people I know (on a rl level) have just got winxp, changed it to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC and they are basically beasts in terms of speed.

Just a bit miffed ;(

In that case that only leaves two options:
1- Your friends are running speed hacks and lying to you :)
2- The clock timings are wrong, either due to a bug in the game or Windows. This known Microsoft bug describes exactly what you are saying. The bug makes the high-resolution clock reported by XP to run faster so everything will happen faster.

My money's on that. Since the bug isn't present in 7 the only way you can get the same performance is by using a some sort of hack yourself.

That sounds exactly what it is (number 2!)
You know I never knew that... So I guess there is no way I will ever be as fast. Thanks for the link me, really appreciated.

No wonder :p

I only played Legend of Mir 2 though...I have fond memory of that game :D Which one is this may I ask?

The screen shot is Legend of Mir 2 - it got re released in America (that is what the screenshot is of.) I play a private server of it (has about 200 + people on peak) which is good fun and well it's mir 2 through and through! If you want information hit me up in trust.

It is Mir 2!? They must have update the interface at the bottom from the time when I used to play on the official Europe servers back then. I quited the game when I reached level 32 or something when I only get like 0.2% exp for an hour's griding lol

Does it still have the Wuma and Zuma Temple?

Well the US mir really messed things up. They re did the GUI which looks terrible. The one that it had before they re done it was much much better. They have a new class the assassin which is good. Fishing and stuff. It has changed a lot, new places to level etc etc. But the Mir2 US is all about the cash shop and think it took about 3 hours for 10-15% for the latter levels that was including uses cash shop exp scrolls!

The official server still has Wooma Temple and Zuma as does the private server.

Still a great game, loads of fun :)
