Hello people.

Off to this glorious city at the weekend with my fiancée for a nice romantic break away, oh and for me to visit the Zoo! :D

I thought I'd ask here for peoples advice for what to do while were up there. The weather doesn't look too great, so that may affect but really looking for romantic things to do. I've suggested a tour of the Vaults but that went down like a lead balloon, i may have to send her shopping and do that one myself. :p

Even if its just places to eat and drink, and which to avoid would be great. We're staying at the Holyrood Hotelapartments, which is about 5mins from the train station (Waverley i think) so focus around there and Princes street would be spot on.

Cheers!

The vaults are actually quite good imo - I didn't find them scary at all. You've also got The Edinburgh Dungeon which is full of drama students but quite good too :p

As for places to eat around the Waverly there's the Omni Centre which has loads of pubs, cinema, gym etc etc.

If you are intending of visiting the zoo be aware it is very hilly, I'd recommend taking the land train up to the top of the hill and working your way back down :)

the ghost tours / vaults is definitly worth a visit, I've done the mercat tours (i think) one as part of a school trip and it was amazing.

Thinking about it, tis a good idea for somethine to do, might take my gf on it.

For places to eat The Witchery seems to be the place to be these days, expensive though, it's up by the castle.

Really want to get her in the vault but since she caught me watching Ghost Adventures where the teddy bear moved by itself shes dead against going in.

I'm going regardless. Where about are they?

Done the dungeon last time i was up there (with an ex) it was ok, bit too much amateur dramatics for me.

Will check out the omni centre.

Is there any guides or stuff i can get for the iphone to help me out around the area? Got a city guide but it gets low ratings.

If you fancy going somewhere you didn't think you could go then try the Grand Lodge of Scotland, Home of Freemasonry in Scotland.

It's on George street half way between Frederick street and North castle street. (about 2 mins from the shops).

They have a museum and on certain days you can have a tour round the Temple

Not much chance of getting a meal in there, or in fact many other popular restaurants this weekend, unless you've already booked in advance.

Men think Ladies want "romantic". What ladies actually want is "shoes"

Want to show her you love her, then when you get up in the morning at your hotel offer to take her shoe shopping. No really!

Think about it, she knows you hate it, but here you are offering to subject yourself willingly to it. If she doesn't see that as a romantic gesture then you have only one thing left to do.

Throw £50 quid at her and tell her to go and get something "Black and shiny"

lol

Yes shoe shopping and clothes shopping is on the list, though if it gets too much am off to the vaults.

George Street (couple of streets up from Princess Street) is great for food and drink, although it can be a bit expensive. The dome, le monde, tiger lilly, ivory lounge are all very nice.

As for things to do, pretty much what everyone else has mentioned. The castle, ghost tours, zoo and plenty of shops (For the missus :p). The choice for bars and clubs is unreal, so plenty to do. Even just walking along Princess Street, heading down to the gardens, bit of lunch, it's a nice day out. So long as it isn't bloody freezing!

I vote for La Favorita in leith walk for somewhere to go! 15 min walk from waverly station or about £4 in a taxi. amazing pizzas!!!

Might do the castle tour if its not too bitter (the weather)

:D we did the special one-off night-time castle tour on the 30th of December for the light night hogmanay stuff. Just after the tour started so did the immense snow. And it was really windy. There's an exposed staircase which faces the new town / princes st. and we had to wait on there for a few mins because of a hold up with the other tours. Really felt like the wind could've just blown us wherever at any point.
Was the coldest I've ever felt but definitely a memorable experience... Although not very helpful to you

We also did a one day tour of the (west) highlands with rabbies.com which was good, but again probably not useful at-all as it starts v. early. The snow definitely made that one more special as well.

We wanted to go to the zoo but it was closed the whole time due to ice, so if the weather is really bad (not that likely) then you should probably check in advance that it's open

I'm going here on the 19th for 3 days for a stag do. Where is good to go on a stag do?

It depends on what you want to do as part of a stag do but around Lothian Road/Tollcross sort of area there are a few stripclubs - the area has the nickname of the pubic triangle for a reason.

More wholesome activities such as go-karting or paintballing are within relatively easy access from the city centre but if you don't have cars there you may need to hire a minibus or similar for transport as I'm not sure what the public transport is like there never having had to use it for those venues.
