Nationwide have decided (for about the 5th time now) to charge me £30 for going a few pounds into the -

I have 5 accounts with them but they still charge me for going into the red. Is there any way of reclaiming these charges anymore?

A paypal to bank transfer should have gone in before a charge came out so this is why it went £10 or so down. It was a cash card that I am now changing to debit and getting a small over draft on it. But still, im down £30 which is quite a lot to me considering this months (last months) outgoings

Not much chance of getting bank charges back anymore. The banks won the court case so chances are they will just tell you to do one

You agreed to the bank's T&C when you opened the account. The charges have been deemed lawful. The fact you said "for the 5th time" suggests your bank will laugh at you if you ask for a good will gesture refund.

Learn to manage your money better, or arrange a £50 overdraft or something if it keeps happening because of paypal etc.

Same thing happens to me all the time and it does my head in. I always pay the money back in a week later if it comes to this but they just automaticly charge me.

I think the only way to solve it is by getting a Overdraft so when you go over you dont get charged.

Yeah why didn't you get an overdraft the first time this happened? and if you knew you were going into the red, what did you expect? You're using an un-authorised borrowing facility.

My advice to your is keep a little cash book handy so you know what your real time balance is. That way, you know.

I have to say I'm a big fan of Lloyds' approach to bank charges - if you are over your limit you get a text to let you know and if you pay in money before 3pm you don't pay any charges.

Very reasonable approach IMO :)

tis good, problem is with that that people aren't always aware of uncleared funds so the balance on wall.. or even online is never really real-time. Spend against previous nights balance at your peril.

I emailed my bank the last time this happened to me explaining why it had happened (damn Paypal) and they removed the charges straight away.

Banks are normally quite good for this tbh.

I have been into Nationwide today and am having a debit card to replace the old cash card. I will arrange an overdraft on this

I didnt know it was going to go into the red or i would have obviously topped it up from a different account. The paypal money should have gone it a day before another payment came out...but it didnt

I might investigate Lloyds, that service with a text seems much better, even if i have been with nationwide for 7 years

As I said, it might pay you to keep your own log of your own transactions keeping a real time balance of your available funds. Something I've done since I was a teenager when i got caught out and got my account closed for going overdrawn.. I've never been in the red since.

In paypal my main account is my cash card - the only that pays rent and has hardly anything in it most of the time. I also have my debit card that i use all the time as a backup account. I would have thought that if there wasnt enough money in the cash card account that it would automatically come out my debit card. But no

I'll just change my primary bank account with paypal to debit card i use all the time. and have nothing related to the cash card if possible

Give em a ring and see if they'll give you it back as a gesture of goodwill, most banks do that for your first charge refund!

As the OP said - this is the 5TH time this has happened.
No goodwill gesture.
Just lessons on money management maybe.

The 5th time he's been charged, not the 5th time he's been refunded, it doesn't matter what number of times you've been charged if you've never received a goodwill gesture before, most banks give you one back once a year.

I would have thought that if there wasnt enough money in the cash card account that it would automatically come out my debit card. But no

Would not the four previous times you have been charged not been some sort of hint that it doesn't work like that?
