5850 overclocking problem

Thanks Blade. I'm in the same situation, my 5850 is about 3 weeks old, so I don't want to risk flashing the bios yet.

So am I right thinkning that losing powerplay means losing power saving mode on my 5850 ie higher temps ie shorter life span?

Just found this instructions and I think I will follow it, I can alwats disable it/revert to CCC, right?

I did the following:

[RUN AT YOUR OWN RISK]

* Reset any CCC overclock
* Download MSI Afterburner http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm
* Install, run it, let it read your card profile
* Go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\Profiles"
* Open VEN_1002&DEV_6899&SUBSYS_0B001002&REV_00&BUS_1&DEV _0&FN_0.cfg with notepad
* Add/change
[Settings]
VT1165_Defaults = 17 33
* Save that
* Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner
* Open MSIAfterburner.cfg with notepad
* Set EnableUnofficialOverclocking to "1"
* Save that
* Restart MSI Afterburner and you should be able to run the clocks up as high as you want.
* Dont change the corevoltage, my Core is 870, Memory 1220
* Save it as a 2nd profile, leave the stocks as the first profile
* In the properties, under profiles, set the overclock as the 3D profile, and set the stock and the 2D profile, this way it's not always running your overclock
* In the settings enable the fan user defined software control, and mine is set at the following: 20%:40C 50%:50C (set the fan speed so your card doesnt overheat)
* Also in the properties, start it with windows, and start minimized

Run FurMark to test stability/temps for 10-15mins (doesnt have to be fullscreen, 1024x768 is fine) http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

Right now i have my 5850 at 870/1220 (stock was 725/1000, new clocks are past 5870 stock), its running at ~50C on full load during games. Works awesome.

Q6600 @ 3.2ghz

BFBC2: 1920x1200 everything maxed, 8AA, 16AF, novsync/hbao, 60-70fps average, i've seen it drop to 30fps when a UAV air strike hit my face and i didnt die

I was busy with my broadband (had engineer at my house), so I still did not OCed yet. Will do that soon, but my question is: is the idea of enabling afterburner overclock only when playing games is a bad one? That way when I use 2D (ie desktop web browsing) I can use powerplay (ie powersaving), when I want to play games I just enable afterburner and do a quick overclock. What do you think? Any drawbacks of using it that way?

theats stock mate it idles at low 20s highest its been so far is 70 on sto only had it a day though. i altered the fan to be a bit more aggressive and its not been over 60 since the fans loud though! i have a panzerbox case which is very very good for temps

That is what i do, Find your best performance values, Save as a profile.

When you are ready to load a game, Run Afterburner, Load profile and play the game.

Gaming finished, Click 'Reset' in Afterburner, Close Afterburner.

Back to default clocks and powerplay is effective in 2D.

mine runs 865/1300 stock are your numbers correct?

Yes, 5850 though, As the title of the thread, I see you have now changed your mind though :D

Low 20's is great, Fan speed around 20 ?

EDIT: 5870 has a larger fan right ?

My 5850 idles around 33C fan speed around 20.

iv set to about 40% at 30 degs down to 30% at 10 20 degs is 30%

it certainly sounds bigger than a 5770 that was near silent even at 50%

il tolerate a bit of noise if it means i run the card cooler

What i meant was ~ Bigger fan = Better cooling.

Seems like your fan settings are a little aggressive, Nothing wrong with that though.

I have setup this fan curve with Afterburner, Works a treat.

33C ~ 34C with fan @14%. It only gets aggressive around 50C, Cooling when it is really needed. I am unable to hear the fan on the GPU when it is idling.

Thanks for that. Will start OCing now :)
