Bad start to the Winter Olympics..

RIP

Reading about it seems there has already been a number of crashes on the course, seems like its pretty poorly designed.

One of the news channels showed the incident earlier it was shocking.

I'm surprised that in the days of health and safety gone mad they had a bunch of vertical steel columns so close to the outside of a corner with no cushioning or anything.

The BBC coverage said it's not been announced yet whether the sliding event tomorrow is going to go ahead as planned, or whether it will be canceled.

A shame it's marred the opening.
Having spent two years living out in Whistler, I know how much the Olympics meant to them, as it was in the newspapers every week.

Very sad news.

What a very sad story for all involved and those who knew the man.

Surely he would have wanted the sport to continue?

Most probably.
Did you see his countrymen when they came out for the athlete parade?

Some of those poor guys looked like they were going to break down. Good on them for putting up a brave face though, as I'm sure that's what he would have wanted them to do.

It seems there's been a lot of problems about this track.

The Canadians actually had restricted training access to it, only letting Canadian people train on it. It's supposed to be the fastest and most dangerous track in the world and they do that, mad.

It's a real shame the Olympics have started like this :( RIP Nodar Kumaritashvili.

It does seem on this occasion that the track designers really fouled up. You look at motor sport and the great lengths that are gone to to make the tracks safe if you do go off. Then the Luge attitude "that the athlete "did not compensate properly"" after an error, Ok but you have limited control and if the accident is happening the track should have offered better protection to the athlete.

Yes Luge/Skeleton is dangerous and always will be as they cannot add very much protection to the sport without it not being the sport but they could have done better on this occasion.

Really feel for the Georgian team!

Also the first person to have to luge, or skeleton down that track!

Poor guy, it sounds like Canada has done this part of the Winter Olympics particularly badly if they've not built in adequate safety measures or allowed others full access to the track. I can only hope the rest of the games proceed more smoothly and safely.

Sad start to the winter olympics in Canada and RIP to the lad but fact of the matter is that any of these sledge sports ie luge, bobsleigh etc etc are all bloody dangerous and if your going to partake in these types of sports then theres a pretty good chance that if things go wrong your either going to end up being pretty badly injured or dead even.

Secretly this is why i watch the sport, to see who comes off, but even so when they do and die it's a sad affair as i do not want that to happen. Sounds like this track could be the problem?.

Yep.

I take the wee-wee out of Adam by saying that his job is launching himself headfirst down an ice track on a tea tray. But there's no way I'd do it - far too scary and dangerous!

Thing is with this track really, a) It's brand new so everyone apart from the Canadians have hardly seen it before, b) It's blooming difficult and fast and c) The Canadians have been very naughty with not allowing others to even book the track to try it out.

Just watching the highlights on BBC HD, wish I was back in Canada :(
