Am of the opinion that they should never treat HIV, by treating it you are giving the virus a longer window in which to infect more people. By treating it you are giving the false impression of health to its victims, this women is doing only that which her instinct is telling her to do. She should have known better but instinct every now and again can win through. She should spend the rest of her life locked up but only so that others don't get infected and not as punishment.

Myth: You can totally live a normal happy, healthy life with the HIV treatments available. This has led to sharing "the gift" in the gay commmunity, and generally an arrogance with condoms.

Truth: Whilst there is no real reason why (in the Western world) you should die young if you take the medication correctly, it is no cup of tea. The side effects are horrible (think chemo) and resistance is very likely. It is not pleasent and not something you would want. You can developy neurological disorders, osteoporosis, cancers, heart disease, kidney failure etc. Add on this to all of the disease you would get through having no immune system: pneumonia, TB, Toxoplasmosis, Epstein-Barr virus, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, HPV, thrush etc....

So anyone that says it shouldn't be treated, in my opinion, needs infecting.

EDIT - just to clarify, it's not being HIV positive that is the problem... it's the onset of AIDS that is. People can go many years before this happens (between two weeks to 20 years is the usual bracket). So it really shouldn't be seen as a death sentence - but it should be thought of as much if only to encourage safe sex.

They are going to die reguardless of treatment, it may give them another 20 years but its not going to be a normal 20 years. Add to that that you have people like this german pop star who are knownly spreading it around. Their sexual habits have got them infected to start with and will more than likely infect others with them habits. Add to that the side effects of their treatments are giving or making other treatable infections like TB untreatable.

Its heartless to let them die as a first kneejurk reaction, but when you think about it its even more heartless to treat them when you know they can't be cured. If they inturn are passing it around and reopening the door to TB and the likes.
