Halo: Reach

I just hope the MP is as fun to play as Halo 2's was, Halo 3 was a step back for me in terms of actual gameplay, but feature wise they did great with 4 player online Co-op, saved films, forge (even if it was ham handed :p) etc.

Although I am liking what I've seen and read so far. Especially the new BR replacement which is 3 shots to the head for a kill :)

It depends on your taste, Halo 1 was pretty arcady but then 2 was more grounded. Halo 3 seemed a mix and that worked well for me and it also had the equipment which I liked so I preferred it's multiplayer overall but the feel of it would give people different preferences. Still I feel this will be a mix between them all and land somewhere closest to 2 with the guns of 1 and 3.

It's rather strange, back in its day Halo 2 was widely derided as a disappointment that didn't stand up to the original but recently it's been getting a lot of credit and praise, especially with the imminent closure of the Live service for original Xbox games.

I always thought the campaign was a bit poor, but the multiplayer was truly revolutionary for its time.

Halo 3 was alright for me, but it just didn't live up to Halo 2 and it was mainly down to stupid design choices Bungie made.

A great example is getting hijacked from a Ghost, in Halo 2 you simply got ejected from the vehicle and it was fine, not unbalanced in anyway. Then along comes Halo 3 where Bungie decided to 'fix' it, so instead of simply losing the vehicle you also now lose all your shield AND get stuned so you can't move for a few seconds, which basically means you're dead. I mean it wouldn't be so bad if it was just losing your shield or just being stunned, but both? So in summary the enemy gets your ghost, while you are forced to sit there while they get a free kill :o

It's the same with the beatdowns where all someone had to do is shoot 5-6 AR bullets into you and melee and you then lose the remaining 40-50% of your shield and die. Again just another balancing issue that wouldn't have been such a problem for me if that melee just took the shield off first and then you had to hit/shoot them again for the kill, it would also make sense since the shield would take the majority of the force meaning it wouldn't be an instant kill. (There was also the issue of hitting someone first and then them hitting you after and you're the one who died because they had 1% more shield :p but they did actually try and rebalance it so it isn't as big of an issue as it was).

The map design also wasn't up to much in comparison either, Halo 2 had classics such as Lockout, Ascension, Midship, Waterworks, Zanzibar, Ivory Tower, Burial Mounds and Headlong. Halo 3 had some decent maps but nothing in comparison to Halo 2's, hell most of Halo 3's decent maps were just remakes of Halo 1 & 2 maps :p
I know it is all down to peoples tastes, but the vast majority of Halo 2's maps were fantastic, I hardly ever found myself thinking "OMG not this **** again" but with Halo 3 not even half of the maps are that great and the ones that are good is because they are remakes.

And incase someone hasn't figured it out yet I am talking about the MP.

I almost forgot MATCHMAKING!

It really does need an overhaul, 3 mins searching for a game just for it to start the search over just isn't acceptable anymore, I tried to play a game of Halo for the frist time in months after getting sick of MW2 and it was ridiculous how long you had to wait to actually get into a game especially when there are thousands of people to choose from.

I've heard that happens a lot in other games too. I don't play online much but Gears 2 had that problem (gears 1 not as much) and Metal gear 4 had it real bad sometimes. The counter on the side literally telling me I'd been waiting 8 or 10 minutes just highlighted it was a bad matchmaking system. Not that I can't just wait though.

Really enjoyed the vidoc, excited for the game despite not playing the single player game of any halo really.

Tempted to play through them all so I can play the story mode in this, and not just the mp.

You may miss a few of the overarching points (any story linking to the other halo games) but it is a prequal so other than the original Halo there's no better Halo to get started with for single player. If you end up liking it the other halo games would all work on a 360 anyway so you could buy them for story but it's a mixed bag as some really like the stories and some don't. At least most should be cheaper now since they've been out a bit.

Basically - I have a bad attention span when it comes to single player games, nothing beats killing other players online

Well I'm not sure but Halo ODST may be a good start for you. It's more of a side story since it was an expansion so not going to be jumping in half way through a plot, it has the halo 3 multiplayer and you'd get to try the Halo reach beta to see if you'd enjoy it. All up to you ofcourse though.

Firefight is also excellent. I'd go as far to say that Firefight on Lost Platoon is the best vs ai combat you can get in any fps, pc or console. If Reach can match that intensity but in a co-op campaign it will be the absolute nuts.

The guys at beyond3d has worked out that reach has a higher resolution than 3 - 1152x720 this time as opposed to 1152x640. There is also an edge blur effect in place, with motion blur. Much much cleaner this time.

They took dual-wielding out of Reach according to 1-up - which means the weaponset can finally be balanced again. Dual-wielding was one of the worst things to happen to the series.
