i7 CPU Cooler Suggestions

I just read few reviews of this D14 Cooler and although it is one of the best you can get there are some issues with its size, esp with 'some P55 motherboards'. The cooler's heatsink is almost touching 1st DRAM memory and GPU card :eek:

I don't want to spend 70£ on a cooler only to learn I can't fit it. I think I will look for something different to fit my i7 860 (1156 socket with p55 motherboard).
 
There is no denying that heatsink is a ridiculous size. Makes the H50 worth it every time IMO, you'd be so very peeved if you're trying to change your RAM/add more, normally a very simple quick thing, but have to unplug your whole darn mobo so you can take off the CPU cooler (assuming the backplate makes things awkward) or at the very least, have to reseat the thing - a pain in its own right.

Very true and knowing that I won't be pushing for any extreme overclocking (just simple 2.8 to 3.8 maybe ;)) I would proably go with this one:

Any recommandations about what fan should I get for it, I don't want anything extremely expensive. Good performance for good price would be nice :) They say 1200rpm 120mm 2 fans should do the trick, but I read in one of the reviews that if I want to get max out of this cooler I should get 2 x 1600rpm 120mm fans.

Hehe the first pic is actually mine. If you're not using RAM with large heat spreaders, then the size isn't a major problem. You can even raise the fan to get more clearance over the RAM. In terms of width, it's no different to most other high end coolers so the problem the person experiences in that second picture would be encountered with the Megahalem as well. In fact, I have a large heatsink over my NB next to my NH-D14 and it's not really a big problem when installing the cooler.

The megashadow with 2 fans will come to £70 at least and will not outperform a Noctua NH-D14.

That first picture has been copied from one of the reviews I read, second is from Notua's FAQ.

The problem for me (owner of 1156 socket) is that most of the top-end air coolers have been designed for 1366 socket. They will fit 1156 too, but most reviewers use i7 920 or higher. It is quite hard for me to find a good CPU cooler that will fit my mobo (i'm not worried about the case as I have CM HAF 922 which is the size of a barn) and without touching GPU or RAM. Choosing CPU cooler is a lot harder than I've ever thought.

I'm not sure now. I want D14's performance, but I also want stress free fitting.

What RAM do you have?

In fact, I'll try it out on a p55 mobo tonight and try and get a picture for you.

I have the exact same RAM as you but as a Triple channel set. So I'll take a pic of what the NH-D14 will be like on an ASUS p55 motherboard.

I'm also testing the new Thermalright Venomous X. If you can wait till the morning, I'll have some results for you.

I can wait, no problem. I still have got some time left as I want to have it here wednesday. Thinking about ordering it (whatever cooler I decide to get) monday evening.

thermalright have a new cooler,hmmif its better than my TRUE Black then it must be good;)
