HIV-positive German pop star charged

Aids boys by any chance? :p

Not at all, make gay jokes if you like I don't find it very amusing however.

Doesn't matter about the stigma you want to apply to it, it is still a killing virus.

Such a horrible point of view you have.

The same go for diabetics and heart desease etc?

Or is it just because the primary factor in its spread is sexual contact? Is that what you don't like?

The real stigma comes from the fact that its a killer not sexual orientation, to you it may have a stigma tied to sexual orientation as I don't recall making any gay jokes. That is a link that you have made not me or anyone else in the thread, maybe you should reflect back on yourself and your own thinking before throwing muck.

Is it horrible because its outside you comfort zone? Lets say that HIV and the search for a cure for it goes along the same path as Leprosy and clocks up some 4000 years. Should we wait till a very small percentage of the population gain an immunity to it as the bulk of the population that don't have an immunity to it are slowly killed of? Or should we perserve the bulk of the population by preventing the spread of the HIV virus by the means of the removal of the infected population? A lot of Africas population has been killed of already. Sexual contact is a fact of life and has no brearing on my view of HIV, it just so happens that is how its spread in the bulk of cases. Again is this your stigmas coming across?

"The same go for diabetics and heart disease etc?"

Your not going to catch them other than not looking after your health, lets get real here.

On till such time that HIV has a cure I think it should be treated in the same way as Leprosy was and I believe it still is in some places. HIV colonies.

i'm inclined to agree with orcish horde on this. i personally believe there will never be a cure for hiv, perhaps this is for a reason?

Retroviruses, such as HIV, have existed since year dot. Certainly longer than humanity itself. So 'thinning out population' arguments are just silly.

There are some good drugs around, education is key - not extermination.

how did hiv come about?
How did life come about?

HIV came from SIV, and in Africa. There are various groups of HIV (MNO, maybe P) that vary slightly in their transmission event (Sooty mangabeys/Chimps/Gorillas). It is thought that the first transmission to humans was in the 1900-1940s - so HIV is a very young virus.

Nevertheless, it probably jumped species due to the preparation/consumption of bushmeat (similar to how Kuru spreads etc). This is called the Hunter theory if you want to search for it.

I highly recommend watching "And the Band Played On".

No.

EDIT - just to clarify, it's not being HIV positive that is the problem... it's the onset of AIDS that is. People can go many years before this happens (between two weeks to 20 years is the usual bracket). So it really shouldn't be seen as a death sentence - but it should be thought of as much if only to encourage safe sex.

Does anyone have a clue as to why it can vary so much?

It evolves incredibly fast.

HIV hijacks host immune cells to propagate further virions, this in turn causes the cellular system to crank out more immune cells. This is ultimately a vicious cycle that can lead to billions of virions in a matter of days. One of the inherent 'flaws' of transcription (in our own cells) is the chance of random error. Imagine drawing the same picture again and again - eventually you'll make a mistake. This is ultimately what underpins evolution - one of these errors could give that particular virion a selection advantage over others, so eventually will become the prevailing type. The sheer volume and turnover means we get so much mutation, and hence variation.

Remember this is patient specific.., so you have different groups, subtypes and then variation within patients and so on. This is what present such a challenge for novel drug interventions.

Says she is being charged in Darmstadt! That's where I used to live. Pretty sure I can account for most drunken nights though.

She doesn't look too bothered about being there...and what is with all the cameras?

Looks like something from a soap!

Am of the opinion that they should never treat HIV, by treating it you are giving the virus a longer window in which to infect more people. By treating it you are giving the false impression of health to its victims, this women is doing only that which her instinct is telling her to do.

Candidate for the most stupid post on OCUK for a while... or today at least! :p

So nobody should be researching or treating HIV....?
Despite the fact that say in this particular case, the men who have been infected by her were unaware and effectively condemned to death by her, yet they should get no treatment to try to stop it?

What about developing countries that have real aids problems, like Africa. Children are born with it... it's not their fault they were brought into the world with it... so should they never get any treatment because of somebody else's actions, or a society in general's actions?

Very silly.

I can't actually find a link to it now, but in one news article, an Aids organization was actually defending her, which I think is wrong. Obviously such organizations are there to support people with the disease, but they should also know full well that somebody with it has to tell others before engaging in unprotected sex.
