why do washing machines have a view?

What if you were doing your washing in space? :p

You wouldn't be using a washing machine that relies on mavity to work (front loaders rely on 'tumbling action' which needs mavity*). :p

* Explained in layman's terms, before the science types claim (correctly) that mavity exists in space. :p

It's to match your computer cases, for full effect a blue neon cathode light should be lighting up the drum.

Except any Washing Machine that's working properly won't let you open the door while it's full. It might be it's stuck from way back when.

Mine is on a timer, either two minutes after a cycle has finished or you've turned turned the machine off, nowt to do with the level of water in it.

Sure it will, just switch it off and wait a couple of minutes for it to unlock. More to the point, it's not like machines never malfunction is it, so the window is still useful.

Actually, no it won't. Or it shouldn't. AFAIK most modern machines (from the last two decades at least) won't unlock the door if there is more than a set level of water in there - timer or not.

Try it if you like - but don't blame me if you flood your kitchen. :D

True, luckily my washing machine is actually more reliable then the earth, and quite possibly older as well.

Why don't dishwashers have portals?

Now that'd be cool!

Saw a demo dishwasher in a shop once with a transparent panel in the door. It was indeed cool! :D

To get back on topic... I think it's so you can laugh at a spaniel sat on the kitchen floor, following the washing round by moving its head in circles.

I would imagine it's probably some psychological selling point (possibly from back when they were knew), people do like to see things working, possibly combined with it being a relatively easy way to make the sealing plug in the door back in the day :) (you need something to plug the gap between the front and the drum where you put the clothes in, so why not a window if you're going to have to use glass/plastic to do it).
