How does this look? (BMW 330cd)

If you were going for a touring for practicality then maybe you should check how impractical a 3-series coupe actually is... space wise I mean. Boot is quite spacious but not very tall, if you need back seats regualrily then allow it cuz there ain't no room... well not if your 6 plus.

OP: Careful with those Auto Trader links - since the site overhaul they contain your postcode if you entered it in a search before linking to the ad.

Yeh, it's my work postcode anyway :)

That's what I was hoping to gain from going to have a poke about. I dont often need the practicality of a larger car/estate and I can always borrow my Dad's car when I do need it - it's not an unreasonably sacrifice

Looks nice, but not £12k nice.

Why not just spend 8-9k on a 330ci and then the rest on petrol?

Unfortunately my finances dont work like that - while it seems like a logical argument, who would actually buy petrol from their savings?

The more expensive car will also be worth more when I come to sell it

just to add to this thread, I do 350miles a week and since owning this 330ci I have managed 34.9mpg.

hopefully that information maybe of use to you.

That is actually - the figures I've seen for the 330i have been more like 25, not 35.... interesting :)

It was your bloody car that got me thinking about a coupe in the first place :p

34.9mpg?! She-it!!! I don't think I could get that in my 325 without driving like an old biddy in the fog but you're getting that in your 330?! I've bought up my average to 25.1 recently but that's still with motorway and A road driving (~110 a day), if I drive slow I get around 30+, but only slightly plus...

that figure is from filling up in Camberley, Surrey driving to Thetford, Norfolk (117miles) and then to and from work trips Thetford to Norwich 30miles

using cruise control @ 70mph, it can be fairly economical it seems! My previous car 2000 Peugeot 306 1.8XS would only just managed 350miles to a full tank! although I proberly had a much heavier right foot in that car.

I will get an average for you from one fill up to the next, as someone else I know would like to know.

What sort of driving do you do mostly, Iain?

Mixed, my daily commute is about 15 minutes through town, 20 minutes down a dual carriageway and another 10 mins though town.

The real appeal of a diesel is being able to drive across the country, or into europe, without worrying so much about the fuel cost

Nope, it's for bluetooth. That's why some cars have it and some don't

nothing really, so dont fret! Its just you were so adamant it was Bluetooth, when clearly it would never have been. Why would the Bluetooth need an antennae?

The phone antennae for the car kit which has bluetooth maybe...

Don't get an auto x30d - they use a GM autobox (unlike the petrols which use a ZF box) which isn't anywhere near as reliable.

The bluetooth option does need an external antenna, all BMW's specified with Bluetooth have a snap-in cradle in the car that charges and connects the phone to the external aerial in the shark fin for better reception.

Just take the 3k saving on a 330Ci out of your savings and into a seperate account to use for fuel. The idea of spending 12k on a diesel because you might perhaps maybe want to drive to Europe and not worry about the cost is retarded. The 330Cd is perhaps the worst value car in the universe.

Thanks for that, I did quite fancy an auto but with that in mind I'll look out for a manual

Not a chance - I'm not spending savings on fuel. A car, although it will depreciate heavily, is still an asset with a value. Fuel is not.

If I did what you suggest and spent the extra money on fuel, by the end of it I'd have spent the same amount and would have a car with a much lower value, thus I'd be worse off. If the economy figures for the 330i mentioned above are realistic, that does put a different spin on it. Plus, I do like diesels - different strokes eh ;)

I want to spend 10~12k on a car that suits my needs (performance, economy, comfort and build quality) - the ins and outs of the financing are really irrelevant here.
