what films in the last deacde or so are future classics?

I thought Inglorious was below average.... really didn't think much of it at all :o

I thought Chapter1 was superb (10/10), however, as the film progressed it became average.

I would not say that it was a (future) classic and in 5 years time, the only thing people will remember about it is its catchy name.

The original King Kong was/is considered a classic, as it redefined the level of special FX which could be achieved on film. It also had a good strong storyline. In its time, it was a movie event (much like Avatar is in 2010).

The Peter Jackson King Kong is NOT a classic. Many people didnt even bother watching it (as shown by the box office receipts) and has already been forgotten by most (unlike films like Matrix, LOTR trilogy, etc).

There are many films that I have liked, however, just because a person likes a movie, does not qualify it as a (future) classic.

Conversely, there are many movies that I have hated, that have gone on to become classics.

This King Kong was fantastic, the only bad point was Jack Black.
It had brilliant effects, the monkey was amazing and the fight with the T-Rex's was jaw dropping.

This film, had amazing effects, a very good story line some good perfromances :) Much like the original at the time.

Box Office takings don't have much of an effect on a classic, was it It's a wonderful life that didn't do well at all at the time of release.

Avatar is just pocahontas, looking nicer.

Most of the Coens output from the past 10 years would easily be considered classics in the future.

Avatar will also be purely for the technical jump forward.

Others? Memento perhaps.

Dead Man's Shoes for instance and arguably This Is England also?

I thought Dead Man's Shoes was brilliant, a real gem of a film.
This is England, while I did enjoy it. I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as Dead Man's Shoes or Somers Town, the latter being a truely beautiful film.

Slumdog is fantastic, I also want to give a shout out to Sunshine, which I thought was very underrated, despite having a fairly "meh" ending. imo.

I would like to add, and I know I'll get flamed to the high heavens for this, Avatar, on a VERY provisional basis, depending on how it ages and how it does on the transfer to DVD/Blu-Ray. Also yes I know the likes of Tummy will start lighting their torches and sharpening his pitchfork but to hell with 'em.

Avatar, hmm. It's not really that good though is it? It just looks nice in 3D, I urge you to see it without the 3D gimmick and see if you still think that it's on par with some of the other classics and epic films, not in regards to CGI because there is more to films then looking nice, it's certainly epic but without the epic story line of a film like Lord of the Rings for example.

This bugs me.

Yes Avatar looks stunning :)
I also thought that films like King Kong, Lord of the Rings also made big jumps forward in terms of CGI.

They are much better films, and don't need to use the "tecnical jump forward" as an excuse to be remembered.

The mere fact that it will become the highest grossing film of all time, will guarantee that it receives "classic" status, at some point.

shawshank redemption ?
silence of the lambs
the green mile
saving pvt ryan
schindlers list
the abyss
all the new star wars films
the usual suspects

bit over 10 years

It's not though, if you adjust for inflation? ;) It's still some way off isn't it?

As has being pointed out, box office sales don't mean it will be a classic.

There is more to film then 3D gimmicks and looking good, Avatar doens't have the other parts of the film at the same level as the CGI.

maybe the Scream trilogy, similar to cult classic movies like halloween
oh and american pie
and Final destination films

Hmm. I very much enjoyed the first Scream :)

I'd like to say Somers Town, I really would. It's such a beautiful film.

One that's a bit unusual but might be considered a classic in the future would be Little Miss Sunshine - it's clever, it's quirky and I don't think it will date all that badly.

Good shout - such a good film.

Pulp fiction, Reservoir Dogs - but surely these are already considered classics?

Shallow Grave and Trainspotting are exceptional films.

Gladiator.

LA Confidential

Fargo and Big Lebowski.

The Matrix must be considered a classic for it's cinematography alone.

I think District 9 has the makings of a cult classic - not sure how it's done at the box office.

Moon really impressed me, and I think will be considered a sci-fi classic- just a very nicely put together sci-fi film - nothing too silly- unassuming but very convincing.

Moon is a very good shout, I was very impressed by it.

District 9, totally slipped my mind (despte watching it 3 times in the past week :D) brilliant film.

A lot of the films mentioned are already "classics" imo.

I watched Benjamin Button and think its a great story that can evoke a variety of emotions as the movie progresses. Its very similar in atmosphere to Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile.

And those will also be remembered for the technical leap forward. I don't see the problem here. Movies are just as much about pushing the boundries of creativity in terms of the world created as they are about character and scripting. Avatar stands head and shoulders above the rest for how immersive it was. I'm sure Peter Jackson is a bit gutted he didn't wait a few more years to make the LOTR trilogy.
