Im planning on getting a new car soon, I been looking at second hand BMW 320d's @ around 75-80k on the clock and about 2000/51/52 plate.

I have a Golf GT TDi with 149k on the clock at the moment (I do 1.2k miles a month). Because of my financial situation paying back debts (which will be clear in 6-7 months time) this will free up a lot of my money.

I have one or two problems with my golf, firstly the remote central locking does not work (on either key *probably the reciever*) so you have to unlock the car manually and turn the ignition key within 20 seconds or the alarm sounds.

Secondly there is a small dent on the drivers wing and some smallish scuff marks on the drivers side front bumper in the corner.

The car has VW service history up to 85k then normal service history until 125k where I then started servicing myself.

Im hoping to get around £1500 for this, does this seem plausable? although im not sure if I can sell it for about 3-4 months yet. Does this seem like a resonable price? It will probably have around 154k on the clock by this point with 3-4 months tax and 3-4 months MOT.

I would rather get rid of it now and get my new car but at the moment I would like to get some money behind me before I have to reduce my savings per month until september when my debts are payed off.

How is selling a Golf diesel and buying an older 320d going to save money? Surely its going to consume money at a far quicker rate than simply keeping the Golf?

If you've got debts to pay then do that first before changing one diesel for another?

Your problems arent real problems, just minor niggles. Just keep it until you have paid all your debt off. Its not going to devalue much in 7-8 months. Dont get yourself into any more debt that you are already in, concentrate on paying back as much as you can until its all clear.

My golf is Y reg with 149k on the clock, I dont want to depretiate more before I sell it as I need around £1500 for it to put towards another car, plus in 6 months time im going to have to pay for tax, mot and if anything is wrong with the car, then that aswel.

Better to get rid of it asap really.

My golf is Y reg with 149k on the clock,

So? What do you think a £2-4k 320d is going to be, a 59 plate with 10 miles on the clock?

I dont want to depretiate more,

Its worth 1500 quid you reckon, how is it going to depreciate any more than that! Its already as good as worthless, it cant really lose much more money.

plus in 6 months time im going to have to pay for tax, mot and if anything is wrong with the car, then that aswel.

You'll have to pay for tax in 6 months time on any car and an MOT is 30 quid!

Better to get rid of it asap really.

It's this sort of logic that got you into debt in the first place :p

Thats all I wanted to know really, aslong as I could get a similar price for it 5-6 Months down the line im happy. Although I will have to pay for tax & MOT renewal, ill have some extra savings to back up my new purchase.

Do you think its worth renewing tax & MOT just before I sell? or sell it with 1 or 2 months tax & MOT?

Not really, that golf will do 200k+ miles easily, just keep it pay off your debts then look at changing your car.

As for your niggles, most cars will have something annoying that hass gone wrong, my central locking occasionally doesn't work in the cold for example just put up with it.

Get the issues sorted - join an owner's club and find out how to rectify them.

Then make the interior all clean and shiney, fit a new headunit / cruise control / some other nice new toy, and get it remapped.

I find doing a few things like this can help me keep a car a bit longer - 149k is nothing on the TDi engines, and Golf interiors are nice when all sparkled up :p

Does it matter what the weather is like to sell your car lol. Title needs changing to whether not weather BTW just thought I would point this out.

Lol, ill watch my spelling in the future.

MOT & Tax shouldnt be too taxing (escuse the pun) the main thing is the remote central locking issue which could put off the sale. Its not a recode I need apparently as both key fobs are not working, its more likely some electrical failure or reciever issue. ~ £200 to fix.

At the moment I have no intention of fixing so would have to advertise this fault in the advert.

One other little niggle which is not always a problem but sometimes happens is during a journey, maybe about 25 miles in, the electric windows fail to work, I can however get them working again by using the door lock/unlock button on the drivers side door and the electric windows will work again.

Ok, well if you change your mind and want to free up some cash, send me a trust. Also, if you need something to keep you going, I even have a 2001 1.7DTI Astra I'd be willing to PX if you wanted it.

Astra would be cheaper to run, but still not worth the hassle of changing.

I would consider PX but to be honest it just adds more hassle onto the deal. I have a car to use should I sell it now as my dad has a spare. The main thing is giving up a good amount of savings per month up until 6 months time when my debt is gone.

His Astra must be dog rough to be worth so little as to make swapping it for your Golf financially worth the hassle! Sounds like a terrible deal and thats before we get to how not great an Astra DTi is.

I'm not fussed if the Astra goes or not as it'll sell easy enough, it was only offered as a potential inbetweener thats cheap enough that it'll be easy to sell when you come to upgrade.

Fox, fwiw, mechanically its perfect, it has a dent in the rear arch, and another in back of the passenger door - looks respectable enough - but it cost me so little (right place, right time) that I can afford to let it go for less than its worth to entice another deal.

They aren't great cars, but the Isuzu engines are pretty strong, and the 16v variants are really economical too.
