Hi new to the Iphone and just have a query. What is the priority that it connects to the internet.
For instance if im away from my house it will use the 3G.
If im in my house and it can connect to my home network would it use this before using 3g???

Thanks

Be wary though that having wi-fi enabled all day will drain your battery a lot faster than normal...

My wifi is on all day. Connected at home and then at work, usually lasts the day out at least 25-40% in the evening. Took some getting used to, my old Sony lasted 4-5 days with moderate use. I get ~2 days with wifi and 3g off but what's the fun in that? :)

Im new to the Iphone as you can tell.
Im with Orange so im unsure what and how i use these things so if anyone cares to explain to a moran, Im all ears :)

Had my first Iphone (3gs) on the weekend, i noticed yesterday after having w-fi enabled all day, even though its not connecting to a hotspot in work that my battery was being drained, it was down to 1/4 by the time I got home. I didnt realise you could turn the 3g off as well ?

Yes i'm an Iphone/Apple noob :D

Turn off the setting for "ask to join new networks"

This will stop the phone searching for new networks when you don't actually want it to/care about them.

3G seems to use far more power than the Wi-fi connection. I turn 3G off and use EDGE.

I agree there. Since I turned off 3G my phone goes down at night with 30-40% battery level rather than 10% to dead.

I don't have 3G coverage in my home town but when I goto Peterborough 3G is actually slower than Edge. I put that down to O2's oversubscribed 3G network.

I'm with Orange, i'll turn the 3g off to see what its like. To be honest its only on the train I will use that. I have wi-fi in my local pub and at home. Can't seem to access any public wi-fi in work & the signal coming from the free public wi-fi in the Welsh Assembly (next door) is too weak to connect.

Not tried it out and about in Cardiff Bay or Town yet but i've had my Orange w-fi access details to connect to the hotspots so I will be giving it a go.

When your iPhone sleeps it usually disconnects from the WiFi anyay - at least that what appears to happen. If I wake up my iPhone now, it shows it connected to Edge or 3G, then after a second or two, switches to my Wi-Fi.

If you don't plan to use your 3G or you know you wont get a signal anyway - switch it off. Emails download just fine over GPRS etc and unless you want to browse on the bus/train you won't notice the difference.

Luckily for me nearly every client I visit has Wi-Fi so my 3G is rarely switched on.

What does it mean when the 3G goes and you get a litte circle?
Anything seems to move slow then when looking over the internet.

Hmm well i have seen 3G and the Gprs circle, but i have yet to see 2g and the E.
Would i still get the E being on orange?
Please excuse the dunmb questions, Im new to this lol.
