Cars, Cops & Criminals!

Yeah, I was surprised that she didn't phone the insurance co to find out more about it, personally I would have done so as he did come across as genuine enough and happy to deal with the police...until they said they said the van was being taken. :p

Sadly, I've had similar issues with the police and insurance, usually involving old "legends" like a car needing to be separately insured to be driven under DOC cover etc.

But the moment someone uses the excuse "I thought I was insured to drive other cars because I'm fully comp", they are the first to say that isn't a valid excuse :/

Thought this was a really enjoyable program to watch. Deffo pointed out a lot for what the general public should look out for.

The designer on the plate made me laugh, wanting to put white ford focus on the plate...would it not be better putting the VIN number or if they must put the colour, put the colour paint code...there is a few different variations of white/blue/green etc etc.

I'm guessing he meant some kind of number sequence code that means 'White Ford Focus'.

Not just having 'White Ford Focus' stamped on the plate.

Why the **** haven't they been onto the DVLA to issue them a new plate? Failing that, I'd be buying the cheapest £250 private plate I could find, just to save the hassle.
Because having a cloned plate makes you immune to speed cameras and London congestion charges :D

Was a great show :)

Always love that sort of thing... Did anyone else notice Ruffy from Road Wars? I had wondered where he went at the end of Raw Cut covering TVP, they made him a DC with AVCIS :D

This isn't a "legend" at all.
Many policies do indeed state that the vehicle needs to be insured before you can use DOC.
I'm not saying it is the case in all, but in many it is.

Mine explicitly states that I have DOC under the following terms:
- Policy owner is aged 25 at the start of the insurance policy
- Other vehicle is in a legal state to be on the road (Tax, MOT and insurance)
- Owners permission has been granted

Things like that are covered in the handbook thing they sent me, not on the insurance certificate. So it's probably at the insurers discression as to the terms they apply.

Does it actually say the "(Tax, MOT and Insurance)" bit or are you guessing that its implied? Who's that with?

I can find it and copy it when I get chance later, it's with Endsleigh and underwritten by Zurich if that helps?

Copied directly from the handbook on the site, link: https://secure.endsleigh.co.uk/HostDocs/PolicyBooklets/MOTOR/2009-09-29.pdf (may not work if not logged in, seems to work across browsers with one logged in (FF) and one not (IE8)).

Footer says Page 6, document page number is page 7:

What is not covered
a) We will not provide cover for the legal liability of any person We insure
under this Motor Policy if there is any other insurance in force that covers
the same liability.
b) We will not cover death of or bodily injury to any person arising out of that
person’s employment, except where it is necessary to meet the requirements
of the Road Traffic Acts.
c) Under this section, We will not cover loss of or damage to Your Car or any
other property belonging to or in the care of any person We cover under this
Motor Policy.

Driving other cars
Cover for driving other cars does not
– apply if You have disposed of the car currently described in Your
Statement of Insurance or it has been damaged beyond economical
repair or it has been stolen and not recovered
– apply in any country outside the United Kingdom
– cover loss of or damage to any car You drive that does not belong to You
– apply to any driver other than you
apply unless a valid policy of insurance is in force for the car concerned

Edit: Obviously no Tax or MOT is going to land you in a big mess with the police anyway (unless conviently taking it for an MOT), but insurance wise is explicitly stated.

Edit2: another bit of interest on the same page:
Driving other cars
We will also cover You, in respect of Your legal liability to others, to drive a private car not belonging to You and not hired to You under a hire purchase agreement or leased to You under a leasing agreement, provided You have the owner’s permission to drive it and You are permitted to do so by Your Certificate of Motor Insurance and a valid policy of insurance is in force for the car concerned.

The chauffer with the two Mercs was a very lucky man to get the one he owned back. I would love to have seen his face when he got that call.
