Idle temps 52c & 54c
Load Temps 63c & 65c (Furmark Multi GPU)

From reading around it seems these temps are pritty good

My concern is the backplate gets super hot, too hot too touch. Is that normal?

Backplate is a heatsink.

Heatsinks that get hot means it's working well :)

65C is very good for load temps on a 4870X2, I'd expect 75C+ easily depending on fan settings.

the backplate heatsink is seperate to the rest of the card. I think it just coveres the rear chips so the actual gpu heatsink which are cooled by the fans make no contact with the back plate??

Unless I'm mistaken there are memory chips on the back (top) of the card.

Either way the fact it's hot is a good sign all things considered, it means it's doing its job.

If it wasnt coping with the card temps and failing to do its job because there was just too much heat output, it wouldnt feel hot?

To the opening poster, what do you rekon your overall case temps are like, and do you think that area gets any airflow?

I run 3870x2, my temps are not as high as yours, but that`s probably cause i am using my pc in relatively cold environment ( 15-18 degrees room temp) and have 4 fans blowing air in the case, after every gaming session i come out of my room affected with frost bite, and deaf with fans noise lol

On idle first gpu is around 20-23, second gpu about 10 degrees more
under load first gpu gets to 45-50 seconds 10 degrees more.

I did have few crashes, but that was when i clock my card a little
