I will be spending time in Mozambique, South Africa and Namibia. Should i take my Nokia N900 and take out insurance on it or get an old phone to take with me?
My parents think i should get a new cheap phone because of the risk of losing and and the costs of insrance and what not but i want to take my N900 because it will keep me entertained but obviously i wont be able to connect to the internet unless there is WLAN available.

So yeah, what are your opinions?

Thanks,
Flare

If you can afford to lose it, I'd take the N900, but also take another more basic phone with longer battery life. That way you can keep the N900 packed away in riskier environments and you've got a backup phone.

When I went skiing I bought a cheap PAYG phone for daily use & put the SIM in my good phone when I needed WiFi etc

i'd really really really strongly recommend that you don't take a £400 phone to south africa.

a family friend was point-blank executed for his mobile phone in south Africa a few years ago, i can't imagine things have improved since.

Old phone!!! What i would do is take an old Nokia with GPS and decent battery life. If you do take the N900 keep it at home, just not worth it to take it out and about.

Id be inclined to get an N82 - decent camera, GPS, quite durable and relatively cheap 2nd hand.

Unless you're getting a driver or being taken everywhere with guards get the cheap phone.

It simply isn't worth it!

The price of a new phone from the big place on o2 is only £14.95 inc £10 credit get a couple of them your sorted its only a nokia 1661 iirc but its a phone and very looseable lol..

thanks for the input people. i should have also mentioned that i most likely won't be spending much time in towns and things because i'm going to be working with animals so will be in wildlife sancturies and national parks.

You're going to Africa, and you want to take your phone for entertainment value?

That's actually kinda sad.

I take it you havent been to the outback in Africa. You need entertainment out there (a book of course would be preferable but a film wouldnt go amiss)..

Yeah i just chose to ignor his comment. I'm going to be right in the middle of the outback in Namibia for 5 weeks so some technology would be nice! Of course i am taking a few books :)
