Emigrate to Live in America?

Just wondering have any OCuk'ers moved from the UK to the US. I know generally its a complete nightmare to get a Visa to work in the US and emigrate over there.

I gather this would be the best place to look: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis


Does anyone have any first hand experance of it?

I have never done it but two of my brothers have. One's been there 20 years, the other about 3.

Basically their work ethic is work, work, work, with some work thrown in as well. Their food is crap unless you're willing to pay top dollar. Laughable laws such as you can't buy alcohol on Sundays in a lot of states, no crossing roads on foot etc. Also everything isn't dirt cheap over there as everyone over here seems to think it is.

There's plenty of little buggery things like that to put up with. Of course, if you are unlike me and positive minded, you might just manage, don't be too put off if it's what you really want.

My bf has. He got a visa through work so they paid for it all. Took about 6 months for everything to get sorted I think. He loves it over there and I'll hopefully be joining him on his visa when I finish uni.
It is a big change but at least he doesn't regret not taking the opportunity that was handed to him :)
 
I have my visa interview (through marriage) next Tuesday. As a result I know far too much than is normal or healthy about the US immigration process, at least the fiancee/marriage aspect of it. All goes well I'll be moving to California on April 6th, fun times :p

I'll be moving out there sometime within the next 6 months. Might keep a blog or something when I do, you know, if I have time to amidst the whole changing of my entire lifestyle... If I do then I'll post back here in case anyone is interested in seeing how it goes. :)

Out of interest, how long did it take to receive an interview appointment after you sent off your checklist to the embassy?

Been over a month for me already (had my medical exam 2 weeks ago) and still no news from them :( I don't like all this waiting!

When I finally move over...mini Ocuk meet? :D We'll be in LA, I'm sure it can't be that hard to meet an ocuker in amongst all those people, right? :confused: :)
 
Ummmm lemme check. Sent off checklist with police certificate etc on 15 December (from the US), got my interview date through by e-mail on 11 January.

If you want to check the status, you can phone a number and an automated prompt will tell you your current status. However it's apparently a bit slow updating so navigate through to speak to someone and you can get the most up to date position. :)
 
I moved over here about 3 years ago (when I was 23) - absolutely love it so far :)
I can't say it is an easy move/process though. I did mine through school to start with, but I am now married (to a yank). Don't really miss much from England except friends and family and a few strange items (tends to be what you can't have).

I got my L1B back the start of this year. I can now work in the US for 3 years as an "expert".

I got legal paper work saying I can do something no american can....

My company did it all, all I had to do was go to the US embassy in London and have an interview that lasted less than 60 seconds. (3-4hour wait for it mind you).

Then plans changed again and now im stuck in Seoul till at least May (or when the Koreans boot me out cause i've got no visa for here)

I've been thinking about emigrating to the US for a while now, even though its just a idea at the moment. Id like to know a little more info from the people that have gone through the whole process. How do you go about the process? Did you already have a job offer in the US? Did you work for a US company in the UK etc... What are the time scales etc..
