Argentina has declared that it is taking control over all shipping between its coast and the Falklands, in effect awarding itself the power to blockade the disputed islands.

According to a decree issued by President Kirchner last night, all ships sailing through the waters claimed by Argentina must hold a permit. The measure seems likely to deepen a row over conflicting claims to oil beds lying inside the Falkland Islands’ territorial waters.

Is there a Argentinian election coming up? As there is no way we are sharing that oil. This is our ticket to get rid of our deficit.

There are Presidential elections due next year. This is probably more than just posturing before an election though. If the oil estimates are true they will want a cut of the revenue - who wouldn't?

Anyone else need more reasons to build the new carriers? They tried it before and now with oil around who knows whats going to happen. If Gordon is in power he will give'em half and the other half to the EU.

Only problem is we can't get to the oil. I was told when we drill it releases gas's that rise up to the surface and are causing whatever is floating on the surface to sink down!

We kicked there **** once & we'll do it again if we have to !!!

R.I.P To the Troops we lost recapturing the Island & Mucho Respect for those that took part.

Except if it happened again we're to over committed in Afghanistan and don't have the resources to kick them out on our own

They're in no position to try again, we've modernised on a larger scale than them, I know we're thin on the ground, and the navy isn't fully stocked, but Eurofighters can match anything they currently have 10 fold, not to mention we can now fly Tomahawk missiles through El Presidente's bedroom window if we feel inclined to.

They're just saber rattling again, the head honcho's seem to do it when they want to distract from more pressing matter's. All we really need is a sanction from the UN or somewhere saying the people on the island decide how they live, and if you try again, and you'll have to answer for it this time.

Argentina has 71,800 troops, what's 500 going to do?

They're highly unlikely to get any air superiority to lauch an invasion - they've hardly upgraded their airforce since the Faulklands War!

My point was more to illustraight that after the Faulklands War, the forces on the island were bulked up slightly.

We did have an agreement to share potential oil revenues with Argentina, then Argentina pulled out a couple of years ago. There's zero chance of another invasion, this announcement is biting their nose off to spite their face - it will just mean that the port at Port Stanley gets upgraded quicker and they ship stuff out from Chile. I have family in the Falklands and due to the frosty relationship with Argentina hardly anything comes from there anyway - that's the good thing about shipping, it doesn't really matter where stuff leaves from.

Trivia time.

During WWII, the luckiest ship in the US Navy was known as USS Phoenix. It was not damaged at Pearl Harbour and survived the war without a scratch.

Some time after the war it was sold on to the Argentinian navy and renamed .... General Belgrano. Say no more.

Yes many of us watched QI the other day as well (although I did already know that ;) :p)

They'll not get away with this for long anyway. You can't just declare 300 miles of EEZ as your own and deny anyone from using it when there's someone else's territory there as well. Utterly illegal act.

QI indeed. Superb show.

As for the OP, despite worldwide committments, the UK military is far more capable than it was in 1982. In air superiority alone, the Eurofighter is one of, if not the, most capable fighter in the world while the Argentinian air force still flies the A4 along with Mirage 5s and IAI Fingers which simply can't even hope to match the Typhoon.

The navy still flies the Super Etendard but on Wiki there is no mention of a carrier in their navy.

Britain also has far superior troops in terms of equipment and training with a far more advanced SF capability.

I can't see the Argentinians repeating their mistakes of 1982.

Methinks some more Eurofighters will be stationed there in coming weeks. Electioneering tool for both sides y'see...

We would never be able to provide a defense of the Falkland's if they ever decided to rattle the sabre again. Our Navy and airforce would not be able to cope with the onslaught. True their airforce is weak but what they lack in capability, they more than make up for in numbers. Don't be so naive as to underestimate their current strengths.
