Right, I'm considering buying a MP3 player before holiday this year (going to Canada for 3 weeks, which will involve a lot of flights and bus trips). The ones I have seen so far that I am considering are;

Ipod touch
Ipod Nano
Cowon D2
SanDisk Sansa Clip+
SanDisk Sansa Fuze

The ipod touch is teeny tiny, and very pretty. But the lack of screen, abd lack of flac support may be a bit annoying. The ipod Nano is better, but again it lacks flac support. The Cowon D2 is possibly the winner so far and the specs look great. The Clip+ is again nice and tiny, but the screen is a little small. The Fuze is also very nice. I like the wheel and it has flac support.

Anyone got any of these? Any thoughts? Something I was wondering though; Are there any small multimedia storage devices with CF card readers, that also double up as decent music players? I've seen some multimedia storage devices that play music, but they are quite big and heavy.

We need a budget mate, but if you want a good quality screen, I'd say the Sony X1050/60, which I have and is excellent, the Cowon S9 or Zune HD all have superb screens, but come in over £200.

I can only comment on the Sony, but the OLED screen is brilliant, the sound is equally brilliant and the touchscreen interface is superb as well.

It doesn't do flac, but I dare you to tell the difference between flac and high quality encoded mp3's.

Thanks for the reply. I think over £200 is too much. I'm thinking probably £120 or under ideally. The flac thing isn't really for the quality, but due to the fact that much of my music collection is flac, and I would like to avoid having to transcode if possible.

I wouldn't get an ipod touch.. I never use mine, its a bit of a bi*ch to get video on there, the apps soon ware tired, and sound quality is poor... but thats just my opinion. - If you want to play get a gameboy- For video and music quality i'd go cowon, maybe the s9 ...

Cowon easily outclasses the iPod touch - friends have one and are constantly bickering, but there really isnt much competition.

Sansa Fuze is pretty good - my 8gb+8gb microsd card is only used for audible books though.

D2 is my day to day mp3 player - 16gb with 32gb memory cards and is pretty much loaded with FLAC.

I moved to the Sansa Clip+ just before Christmas, and I'm glad I did. It's simple, it plays music VERY well, and is easy to use, that's all you need. It's cheap as well. The screen is a breathe of fresh air, there is no need (unless for watching video) for a snazzy high res colour touch screen, it just makes things overly expensive, and they get scratched fair too easily anyway.

Only criticism I have with it is the battery life, it will need to be charged regularly if you listen to music a lot (every other day), if you're using it lightly then the battery life doesn't become much of an issue.

Got the Sansa Fuze for christmas.... its very nice indeed!!

8Gb Fuze + 8Gb Card - plays Flac files very nicely :D

And cheap too!!!

Thanks guys. I don't know why I listed the Ipod touch, I actually meant the ipod shuffle. I think I'm leaning towards the 8Gb Sansa Clip+ at the moment. shame about the battery life though. If I did go down this route, what headphones do you guys recommend? I think id want something small and discrete, but I tend to have problems with in ear ones (must have funny shaped ears or something as they always fall out) so maybe some wraparound ones might suit me?

Mine is charged every other day - used for about 4-5 hours a night while trying to sleep and failing.

Shame it doesn't have a mains charger with it - only the usb connection.

That's my set up.

8gb Clip+ with 8gb card.
Audio Technica ES7's
I don't use the penguin amp much anymore, it's a back up as I have a new amp, but if I'm honest the Clip+ doesn't need an amp with these headphones.

I have a Sansa Fuze 8gb, the menu system takes a little getting used to. It's a solid device, decently made, the back has a grippy rubber finish and sound quality is good. I'd say if you want FLAC support it should be great for that - I have some FLACs on there and it plays them fine, battery life seems lower than playing MP3s though.

I suggest you take yours back because there's obviously something wrong with it.
I do a one click MP4 convert with Movavi and the sound is excellent especially through my Ultimate Ears IEMs.

The two Sansa Clip+ players arrived today (super fast delivery!). Have been using it most of today. Love it already. It sounds great, is teeny tiny and very easy to use. The headphones aren't great, but my Head-direct RE0 IEMs should be here in a few days. It also works well with my Sennheiser HD485s. I feel I also need a 16 or 32Gb memory card, as I have already filled the Clip+ and have plenty more music I want on there. But overall I am pleased with my choice.
