*** Final Fantasy XIII ***

If you think 70% was a bad score, get a load of this:

http://ps3.kombo.com/article.php?artid=11740

^^ I'd take that with a huge pinch of salt, though some of his points have been echoed by others.

The reviews (both good and bad) so far have been all over the place, and I sense shenanigans. Famitsu gave it 39/40 and Dengeki scored it 120 out of 100. Famitsu I just don't trust full stop (they say FF12 was the best in the series) and Dengeki... 120/100? Better than perfect? Come on now.

I think "As if you could play this for 100 hours! I could put up with 8" shows that the reviewer didn't exactly play very much of the game.

I wouldnt take any reviews into account really...Well I dont, since every reviewing site magazine, whatever, gives my favorite game series a pretty consistant 50-60% for the past 10 years :P

Wow. I don't think trying to ignore criticism is going to do them any favours.

The game's director Motomu Toriyama added: "We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom."

And this right here is the crux of the problem, and where the two cultures clash. Square are trying to make a jrpg appeal to the West (which is fine, and definitely a step in the right direction - there's loads both west and east can learn from each other), but they thought just making it fast paced and action oriented would guarantee the success they're looking for. That is fine for Call of Duty, it is not fine for a wrpg. I've said this before, but if Square wanted FF13 to be as successful as possible over here, its all about freedom and branching dialogue choices. That's whats popular in the west, that's what people expect and want. Throwing Leona Lewis on it won't work.

How bad is the "maps" from what I've seen they been long and straight with little else till towards the end which dose not appeal to me at all.

Loved Lost Odyssey (first every JRPG I've liked and finished)and I was expecting more than what has been reported (the map thing , no towns etc) and as for reason why theres no towns what was it "it be to hard to to on a next gen console"

A. Look at Lost Lost Odyssey and evey other JRPG on the 360/PS3 ,western ones to like dragon age

B: Move some peeps from the "pretty & trying to hard FMV department" and you might some man power for more "game"

but hey at the end of the day what matters is that you or I have FUN playing FF13 even if it is a little shallow.

I can't argue with the fact it's linear, it is, and there aren't any towns.

I still enjoyed the game and would recommend it to JRPG fans though :) Non-fans will probably not be pleased...

After Lost Odyssey I'm indifferent now to JRPG's and would consider FF13 (played FF12 and go bored despite the bunny eared lady which i took a foundness to :D) and couldn't get past the first disc of Blue Dragon (wasn't liking the gameplay and the art style much)

I see what the GF says since she loves both FF games in general and Lost Odyssey

I'm so confused! I doubt there's any way I'll get away with not buying this game now, albeit a few weeks after release, because it's final fantasy and I've bought every one since the SNES days. I'm generally speaking a massive RPG fanatic, so I know I'll enjoy it too, as long as I don't think of it like a final fantasy. This is gonna be interesting.

no towns? and no real world map to explore? am i reading this correctly..? XII and now this. kinda losing faith in square/enix now..

I think thats the main reason why SE don't want to remake FF7. I mean if they cannot even make towns or even a world map for XIII how would they even start with FF7....

As mentioned I think they are trying to appeal to the western market more and have well imo done a very bad job of it. That said I am not skilled in marketing I am sure they have a huge well paid team that have degrees on such matters.

I personally would have prefered them either tone the graphics down or just take longer producing the game and come up with full towns and a world. But hey thats just my opinion.

I still reserve my judgement on XIII until I play it personally, but I have to say the thought of well no exploration is a BIG downside to me. Its one of the main things that main FF great, the epic stories and the epic worlds to suit and explore.

Looking forward to this! Will keep my happy until the big boy MMORPG FFXIV is out later this year!!!

No matter what I hear about the game I just know I will buy it anyway just to find out myself if I like it or not.

Ditto ^^

I dont understand why people are demanding world maps and towns I know this might be traditional off FF in some sense but just take a step back calm down and just see what the game is like when you actually get it in your hands. Im playing FF VIII at the mo and tbh the world map is a nightmare unless someone can point on to me where the hidden compass is to at least let me know when im heading east to the east academy?

This minimap in the corner has a huge glowing triangle to tell you which way you're looking.

Final Fantasy has always delivered in the exploration department. To my mind, X suffered from its lack of a roamable world map - poking around in out-of-the-way corners has always comprised a solid chunk of my FF first-time playthroughs. To completely remove towns from the equation is a radical change, and change is scary for series fans because it normally translates to 'fail'. I'm perturbed by the information, but like others, I'll still be buying it to play through myself.

Edit: also, 'wait and see how it plays' was one of the big defences of MW2's multiplayer aspect, and that turned out to be a kick in the nuts. Then again, such a comparison would be much more effective on the PC forum.

Indeed. Reviews to a certain degree shouldn't be taken as hard fact since they will vary depending on who has written it and their tastes.

One thing that is a bit upsetting though regarding the Final Fantasy series is it's taking a more modern approach. I have always preferred a more mystical, ancient type world. (I am not sure If I have made that very clear but lets hope someone understands what I mean :p) Though, I guess that was always going to be the progression of the game.

I am certainly still looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII though. :D

On my FF VIII the world map has no huge glowing triangle nor does it tell me which way im looking... the screen is just squall and open land and I've to go East but how do I know which way East is?

RE: MW2 comment wasn't that to do with BETA access? not sure how this relates to my quoted text as it seems in different context to the 'wait and see' relation?

I get what you mean for the most part, but many FFs have blended the two well - VII and VIII obviously, but VI had mechs and techno-cities, and X made it an interesting story structure. I've always loved how they've blended magic & engineering, and as long as the fantasy setting isn't drained too much in XIII, I'll be happy with the style.

unlike final fantasy 1-9? which all dumped you iun a huge explorable world? were these now 'western' rpgs? as opposed to being japanese?

that makes no sense if you read the developers quote above?

It just seems a lot of the reviews are saying that is crap because it doesn't have towns and world maps a la previous FF's I just wish they'd score the game on its on merits rather than comparing. Would they be thrilled if the gameplay was terd but it had world maps and towns? Maybe that wanted to try a more fluid approach with XIII.

You're talking about the minimap in the corner, right? If you've got the camera set to free rotate, the glowing triangle appears - should be one of the shoulder buttons. If you have the camera fixed, there's no need for a triangle - you're always looking north. Regarding MW2, my reference is to the PC version - how they violated the multiplayer by turning it into a P2P console-style matchmaking system. The lack of dedicated servers is a huge blow, and while a lot of people responded to the nigh-universal outrage with comments of 'just wait and see how it plays', it simply hasn't worked - people miss the mod community, clans aren't working out well, 18-player limits don't allow for epic battles and the whole community is riddled with hackers that the VAC system simply can't or won't deal with. As I said, it'd be much more relevant on the PC forum, but I'll admit that it's an extreme comparison.
