Hi guys,

I currently have a E6400 in my system clocked to 3Ghz using
OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum ram.

I have been offered a used E8500 for £50, first question is should
I buy it and second will I be able to overclock it using that ram
or will I need something faster, I have a Gigabyte P5C DS3R board.

I have an Antec 300 case with extra fans and an Artic Freezer Pro
so i have decent cooling.

Any help /advice or links to overclocking with that chip and board
appreciated....:D

So thats a tentative yes then lol....:p

So anyone got a link to a guide to overclocking
that CPU and board combo please.

Also as I understand it the multiplier on a E8500
is 9.5 so what should I set my ram multiplier at
so it doesn't try to go above its speed?

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Well first you will need to flash your bios to the latest version..do this before you remove the old chip.

but you will be limited by ram. you want something capable of running at least 950mhz to get a good OC on these due to the cpu multi often forcing you to push your ram/fsb as high as they go. but it's still an epic deal if they didn't kill it with excess volts (wolfys have been rumoured to degrade under >1.45V)

Great stuff....will bite his hand off then.

Whats the max FSB i should get on this with that OCZ ram, the default on that chip is 333 I think, I would like to get it to 4Ghz which is 420 FSB.

Cheers again for the help guys....:D

It will probably do 420 but you may need to slacken the timings a little. Worse case scenario is the ram won't overclock at all and you can only get to 3.8Ghz.

(wolfys have been rumoured to degrade under >1.45V)

How do you mean that mate ?

Wolfdales @ 1.45v (And above) see quicker degradation than under 1.45v ?

Just the way it's worded :D

OP: Absolute cracking deal, As been said, Up the FSB as far as you can get it. Best to find out what the memory will do maximum.

Absolutely yes. If you don't want it I'll have that, and I don't have any 775 gear left so would be building a computer from scratch that I have no use for

Absolute bargain at that price, plus i think your ram will be fine, ran some ocz reaper (basically the same as the platinum bar the heatpipe) at 420mhz 4-4-4-15 on 2.1 vdimm along with a q6600.

well the deal is done....:D

Lets see what I can get this E8500 running at.

Don't suppose an E6400 is worth much these days...lad at
work would like it....is £30 a fair price??

Cheers for the replies all.

i have a e8500 and 8gig ocz ddr 2 pc-8500 ram

mine runs at 4.5ghz on air @ 1.36v
goes like a bird and never goes above 62c.. max recommended is 72c i believe

for 50 quid its a steal
use the money you saved compared to a new one for some pc 8500 ram
and clock away

You'll get it to 4ghz easy with that ram it's only 425mhz might have to relax the ram timings a tad and up the voltage a nadge but I cant see a problem.

If someone offered me an 8500 for £50 I'd be at their bank before they could reply to the thread in the mm.

I think that ram and a lot of 6400 ram is capable of much much higher anyway with the right settings like easily 450-500+ in some cases.

Cheers for the advice all....my ram timing are currently 4.4.4.12 what should i reset them to if I go for a 4Ghz overclock or is it just a case of experimenting with various until stable?

Cheers

Try 5,5,5,15. Then once CPU is stable try to see if you can get them stable at 4,4,4,12 again (they probably will be fine at the stock timings)
