BBC announces iPlayer, News and Sport apps for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry

No mention of the iPlayer app being able to download TV to watch later, unlike the Symbian version. Is that right? If so, that's a great shame.

You know what's coming next don't you. A TV licence for phones or they will put the licence fee up to cover the phones.

Britain's newspapers are demanding the BBC's plans for iPhone, Blackberry and Android news and sports apps are stopped.

The Newspaper’s Publishing Association (NPA) argues the corporation “muscling” into the market will make difficult for other UK news organisations to make any money from apps, whether through selling apps, subscriptions or ads.

Has it, as far as i know WinMo has never had an iPlayer app, you have to use something like mPlayer.

Well my HD has an iPlayer app so...

Perhaps it's not 100% official, but it identical in design to the online version.

Well they didn't put the license up for iPlayer in the first place did they?

They'll get in to a place of market dominance, and then demand a fee. To be fair, to access iPlayer already you should have to have a log-in where you validate your address and license number or similar. It's a great service. :)

Only bad thing about these mobile apps will be the damage they will do to the 3G networks... how are they all doing for capacity these days?

Heard about this over at crackberry and cant say im interested in it in the slightest...not something that i would pay for nor would i use if it was free.

how would using an "app" be any different from browsing the BBC news / sports website from a mobile like I do daily on my commute to work?

You could ask the same question about 90% of the iPhone apps, which essentially just replace a webpage...

Of course i live in the UK;)...what makes you think that i dont??

I dont see the point of this BBC app in all honesty...plus i dont think mobile phones are going to be getting this for free...am pretty sure there will be some sort of pricetag on it.

Symbian isnt worth developing for imho...its slowly dying a death due to other much better OS's out there.

I thought you lived in Canada - maybe Im confusing you with someone else (but yeah I just noticed your location.:p)

The BBC will not charge for their apps. period.

Symbian isnt worth developing!? Its market share increased last year and holds 40% share - infact if there was any one OS to deveop for the BBC should probably develop Symbian. I do agree that Symbian is poor though.
