i have an i7 oc'd to 3.80ghz
mobo is gigabyte GA-EX58UD5.
which would you say keeps it cooler an H50 corsair w/c or at present fitted
noctua NH-U12P
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler (LGA1366/LGA1156/LGA775/AM2/AM2+/AM3)
also another question has anybody managed to get the cpu sucessfully oc'd above 4.0ghz?

The H50 would possibly be on a par with the noctua, regarding getting your combo to 4.0ghz, lots of users on here are running the same combo you have at 4.0ghz (gigabyte ex58 ud5 is a very popular board on here), the main voltages to tweak are the qpi/vtt and vcore. Will also depend on the multi your running, 21 x 191 is easier to get stable than 20 x 200.

thanks setter ive managed to get the o/c on a usb stick so hopefully just install it. but was just wondering if i need to upgrade to watercooled as i see most that have managed 4ghz have gone for it.

Id say that the majority of users here on 4ghz are on air cooling, TRUE black here with 2 500-1300 rpm pwm fans, max temps of 76-71-72-70 using LinX.

4Ghz is fine with air. 4.2Ghz is starts to hit its limits.
Agreed, im already hitting 76c on my current air cooling (1.2750 vcore), ive tried a pair of 2000 rpm fans on the cooler, small drop of 3c per core for a lot more noise. Im considering the custom watercooled route, finances permiting of course.
