I7 worth extra 130 pounds over I5?

Just built an i5 750 rig for FSX and after getting a new gfx card I'm finally up and running. The OCUK overclock is unstable so waiting for a new profile but FSX runs sweet, all sliders maxed at 1900x1080, DX10 enabled at about 40/50fps. O and thats on the stock profile at 2.66Ghz. I got the i5 750 OCUK bundle. GFX card is an ATI 5850.

A hyperthread'ed core is worth on average 25% of a real core. It does range from +50% to -2% (depending on software) however, but just take it at 25%.

If paying extra is worth 25% (average gain) then yes, otherwise save the money and put towards another processor in 3 years time. i5/i7 will be old hat then.

BTW. I'm comparing entry level i7 to i5 750 (quad). I think i5 750 is best bang for buck chip currently.

Hi,

40/50 fps is very good!! Do you get that in straight and level flight aswell as when turning??

Hi, Just wondering if an I7 mobo, cpu and ram is worth an extra 130 pounds over an i5?
I play fsx a lot and thats about it really. Decisions.

I wouldn't bother mate. I'm guessing from the £130 difference you're probably already looking at a cheaper mobo and RAM. You could get the top 1156 gear and save £100's from the top i7 gear. There's a good article on Tom's Hardware that shows just how little difference having an i7 over an i5 makes in gaming.

Intel were clever in bringing out the i7 first.

i think getting the triple channel ram is some justification for getting the i7. in the next year we will be able to buy 4gb sticks so 12gb in just one set. i think people overstate the upgrading time of systems. ive had a pentium 4 single core with less than a gig of ram and i can still play some games on it. and that was from 2003. so i dont think with the power of an i7 that you will need to upgrade in 2-3 years. more like 5 years IMO. so like many have said before, if you have the money go for an i7. and you shouldnt just choose a system just by the processor. look at the other options and features with each chipset. for instance triple channel with x58. and yes intel will most likely bring out new cpus for 1156 but an i7 has power that we cant use for gaming. in a few years games will start taxing the i7 more. same most likely with i5 cpus but they will have a lower threshold. go i7 if i were you.
