More Fermi bad news

by Charlie Demerjian

Filed under I for IGNORE. :)

Although, I am pretty surprised we don't have any tidbits of information about performance. I really hope CeBIT gives us something to go on.

im sure i read a similar length rant about fermi on that site only a couple of weeks ago.

while im sure there are elements of truth in that article (woop! ati fan :D), at the very least there must be a considerable amount of exaggeration, but i reckon there might be a slight bias going on there...

also, where are they getting their many sources from, when not many other sites are even mentioning these facts?

edit: found other one: http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/01/17/nvidia-gf100-takes-280w-and-unmanufacturable/

Charlie is an actual reporter, he goes to all the trade shows, major public ones, small private ones, industry only, he meets people, and has contacts throughout the industry, rather than do what Fud and others do, which is check other news sites for info and repost it, he does this thing called investigating.

Yet to see him be wrong, in the past 2 years or so, on anything Nvidia at all.

UNfortunately other than a slightly OTT writing style, theres actually likely very little exageration, if any at all, involved in the article. Considering back before Nvidia even announced the fake fermi and launch in November, he was saying at the VERY earliest, some supply in March, if another respin, real volume a heck of a lot later.

THe biggest thing to point to would be bumpgate, this was something Charlie outed that no other "news" site had, he investigated and found it out, Nvidia have since paid out hundreds of millions in damages to guys like Sony, Apple and a few others, no I don't think Sony and co wouldn't have gone after Nvidia, nor that they didn't know what was going on. But it was certainly Charlie that outed it, and its industry wide knowledge that its true.

Amongst the majority of "news" sites in the tech world, he's one of the very few PROVEN investigative journalists these days.

Nvidia guys will say he's wrong till they are green in the face(too easy) yet, every single time they all say he's crap and lies, I ask for proof, they go silent.

Basically its as simple as this, he's been around so long he knows a few people that work in most major companies in the tech industry, rather than spout rumours and crap, he simply makes a call to someone at TSMC and asks them whats going on, its not rocket science. He gets a little OTT, and for most people goes into too much detail, though when you understand the manufacturing process, you realise he justifies what he's saying very very well. Yes he dislikes certain companies, and yes he's gone after AMD in the past, and present, and quite likes his Intel chips too. He simply goes after anyone screwing up, if they happen to be stupid and lie a lot while treating their customers like poo in general he'll point that out too.

You could argue he's be writing nothing, if Nvidia didn't keep screwing up, if AMD start screwing up in the same way he'll happily go back to having a go at them and pointing out why they are screwing up, as he's done in the past, its hardly his fault AMD haven't screwed up for a couple years.

The particle physics research laboratory Fermilab is also named after him. So whenever I hear about GF100, I automatically think "Fermi", then I think "particle accelerators" - so obviously it must be cool :D

On topic, the whole saga looks like GeForce FX all over again.

I just wish Nvidia would announce something so I can upgrade already. BORED NOW.

And by that comment you deserve to be...
Even when it is announced, your probably not going to want to upgrade to it.

Edit:
Maybe 2011 will be the year for you???

I'll upgrade to whatever is the best on the market for the best price ATI or Nvidia, also if rumors are true and ATI has a refresh of it's cards to release when Nvidia bring out the Fermi, it's another reason to hold off, since I can grab 1 of those refresh cards instead. But the wait is killing me, I want to upgrade for BC2 :(

I'm holding out for Fermi for CUDA (i'm not a programmer, i just use some 3D software that benefits massively from CUDA acceleration). If it's really crap i'll just have to live with it and not buy any graphics card for a very long time, but there is still the chance that some of these stories are fabricated.

My 4850 has served me really well so far for games, but Nvidia still dominate heavily in drivers and acceleration support for 3D apps.
