Am narrowing the competiton to the above two excellent mobiles altho I have a couple of questions:

- Can the Desire (running android) utilise TOMTOM satnav at any forseeable point? If not what decent alternatives are there available on Android?

- What software for the playback of Divx/AVIs would be needed (if any) on either of the two handsets or would there be native playback available?

- WinMo 7 (potentially in the future) or Android - Pros and Cons?

- Which would you choose and why? (Always good to see other people's opinions!) Also, the Nexus 1 is a no go since the Desire is my choice outta those two particular models.

Thanks for the help - am really looking forward to an new phone and am having the hardest time choosing between the two - Why did they have to be so good!?!?! Mobiles seem to be like buses of late - none come along for ages and then they all seem to appear at once :p

Android is here now, with lots of handsets coming in the next two months.

WM7 is, I understand, not likely to see a handset until the end of this year.

You can get plenty of good gps nav software in the Android market, and with a little bit of research and no rooting get Googles own free nav software :) the amoled display is harder to use outside, but the results inside are stunning.

Personally I'd go with the desire, as I'm a nexus user as they are basically the same phone. My advice would be to try them both in store - really get into the hd2s sub-menus to see if you live with un-skinned Windows mobile. I couldn't

On Windows phone series 7 its looking like being as closed as the iPhone in terms of app development, and doesn't look like any current 6.x will be upgradeable :s

Hope this answers some questions :)

How often did you use the unskinned WM menus though? I have a HD which is less skinned and touch the WM menus about once a month!

As for the latter it has been confirmed that WP7 will be officially brought to the HD2 so that is incorrect. :)

Was that confirmed a while ago by HTC? I'd take that with a pinch of salt unless its been confirmed this past week - the hd2 doesn't match the "essential" specs laid down by Microsoft - it doesn't have the correct 3 physical buttons at the bottom (yes they are being that picky). I'd love it to come to the hd2, I just doubt it'll actually happen officially :/

EDIT: Links with back ups to my points

The HD2 won't be allowed WinMo7: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/17/windows-phone-7-series-everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know/

The app approval process will be similar to apples: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/02/developer-documents-leak-showing- windows-phone-7-api-info/

Fair play, hadn't picked up on that one :( looks good. Is it going to be a free upgrade for the HD2, given that Microsoft has said they'll be selling 7 to manufactures despite Android being free?

HD2 will get WM7, there was a demo of it running on WM7.

I'd get the Desire as I'm getting tired of WM and want something fresh and new ...

I have a vested interest, I've got my upgrade in a couple of months and I really like the HD2. :)

As for price they sell all the Windows mobiles, either way XDA will give us it for free.:p

I was debating between the Desire and HD2 but have made up my mind on the Desire.

Spec for spec the 2 phones are nearly identical. The HD2 does have a bigger screen however it's not an AMOLED display so won't be too good outdoors. The Desire's screen is smaller but IS an AMOLED screen which should be a brighter and more vivid screen.

The HD2 runs on Windows Mobile 6.5. Ignore people saying it will be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7 Series. Although there are rumours spreading all over the net, including an image of an HD2 "apparently" running Windows Phone 7 Series, it has not been officially confirmed by Microsoft.

The fact that Microsoft has yet to confirm this begs the question "Why not?"
I personally think that the HD2 will NOT be upgradeable. This would make sense as it would explain why Microsoft has not confirmed the upgrade. If they told people that the HD2 won't be upgradeable then people wouldn't buy it.

The Desire runs Android 2.1 and I think this will be the much better OS. If you look at the phones due to be released this year they're nearly all going to be running Android. Even if Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Series is absolutely outstanding, I think it will flop. It's too little too late from Microsoft. By the time it's released towards the end of this year, nearly everybody will be tied into lengthy contracts with their nice new Android handsets. The Android apps marketplace will be booming and Android will have the biggest market share. I can't see how Microsoft could compete with that.

As I said, I would go for the Desire over the HD2 because of the AMOLED screen and because of Android 2.1. Also, a new home screen for Android is currently being tested called TAT Home Screen. It looks even better than HTC's Sense UI on the HD2!

Check it out here: http://www.tat.se/home/

Let us know which phone you decide to go for.

This AMOLED screen, i'm confused with as so many previews/talks about it have said it is really bad outside..

As for the upgrade microsoft themselves have stated in the last day or two that more information about WP7 and the HD2 will be released at their more in depth conference next month. To me that smacks of an admission that it will be coming to the HD2, especially after the multiple confirmations before. Just seems a bit odd that microsoft themselves haven't said a straight no to it.

So yeah they haven't confirmed it, but more strikingly they haven't denied it and are actually stating they will discuss it next month.

I doubt WP7 will flop, however I do wonder what businesses will do as WM 6.5 isn't going to last forever and it is still the mobile platform of choice for proper business (not talking about the people that "need" email on their phones so get the iPhone etc). I can almost see microsoft releasing a second version of WP7, much more like WM 6.5 for the business people.

As for market appeal android still has a very long way to go before it overtakes WM in those stakes.

AMOLED screens are absolutely garbage for outside.

As said before I would go for HD2 personally simply because of its future upgrade possibilities. You will have a choice of 2 OS's essentially.

People say WM7 is a long way off and yes that may be the case, but Android is already starting to bore the pants off a lot of people as every other phone is being released with it on, imagine the market flood in 6 months time....

It wont be long before Android phones are being chosen simply for their looks because software wise, they'll all be the same.

Having said that, I love Winmo, Symbian and the Blackberry OS so my opinions aren't worth crap because I like my phones to firstly be phones and judge them by call quality etc, so my opinion on whats good or not by todays standards aint worth crap.

was there any advice re: divx playback and what (if anything) is needed per mobile?

I'm also faced with this decision and i'm going for the Desire.

HD2 runs on 6.5. Even if it is upgradable i'll still be stuck with 6.5 until September (at the earliest - rumour is LG is releasing a 7 phone then.) By the, we'll probably be seeing Android 3.0.

The rate at which android update their phone OS is unbelievable, you're guaranteed consistent updates, something i'm unsure of with Winmo 7.0.

Being able to record at 720p is something that the HD2 doesn't do, and seems a nice feature.

If it wasn't for Touchflo 3D the HD2 would be far from the phone it is, but without Sense UI the Desire is still a decent phone, ala the N1.

So.. Desire it is for me...untill A Windows Mobile 7.0 phone comes out near christmas, then i might just buy it sim free.. (I better start saving!)

Makes sense :) Also, that redmondpie site is useless - They've just made a serious post about overclocking an Nexus One to 9GHz :o It was on XDA.... And if you read the post its even admitted that it is a photoshop. So I now don't trust it for anything, especially not "leaked" windows phone 7 series HD2 shots.

Everything seems to say this but I've never had a problem with mine and I have it almost permanently at the lowest brightness.

People say "outside" but mean direct sunlight. Pumping up the brightness outside helps, as does angling it so the sun isn't reflected from the sun into your eyes. If you're sensible its very usable outside, not perfect, but usable. It does seem to be over-dramatic to say they don't work outside  I think its just jealousy tbf :P
