More aggogance from one of Lord Snooty's geriatric chums

A senior Conservative MP who is stepping down from Parliament after being embroiled in the expenses scandal has fired a parting shot at plans to reduce the first-class travel of MPs.
...
He said that he was “infuriated” that politicians were being “put below local councillors” and that there was a “totally different type of people” on standard-class trains. (The Times online
The phrase “a totally different type of people” is believed to refer to people who work for a living and pay taxes.

In fairness to Lord Snooty, he did distance himself from the views of someone who is clearly a suitable case for euthanasia.

I don't see the big deal about this. I also (usually) go first class on the train when I have to work and I know it'll be a busy time.

He however could've phrased what he said better, because I've also seen loudly-talking self-important types and all sorts in first class!

"Upper class individual in inappropriately-phrased comment shocker."

Meh.

It's obvious he was simply referring to those on standard-class who don't have business work or study to do while travelling, and his ire at having to be inconvenienced by those surroundings. We all know those in more privileged positions don't phrase things particularly well a lot of the time.

But hey, let's all start burning effigies. Why not.

It refers to the scum I have to commute with. I don't blame them for wanting some peace and quiet if they are travelling on expenses.

This is being blown out of proportion. He was clearly reffering to people who don't need to work/be quiet when travelling.

There IS a difference between First and Standard rail travel - Standard is busy, its full of people chatting with friends, making phone calls, people with young children, etc etc.

First is different - it is considerably quieter, considerably less noisy and it's far easier to just get on with some work in peace in First Class.

Can you honestly imagine getting a laptop and some papers out onto one of the few tables in a standard class carriage? You just can't - you can manage the laptop on its own and thats it.

But hey, lets take it out of context and start a class war.

If you or me were travelling for work we'd sit and not do any work, as it would be a great blag. At least MP's spend the often long train journeys actually working.

If I am making a long journey on a train on my own I'll always travel first. If I'm making a short journey or travelling with my girlfriend, I'll travel Standard. Why? Because when on your own you want some peace, some quiet and some space but if you've somebody to talk to etc etc it matters less.

""If I was in standard class I would not do work because people would be looking over your shoulder the entire time, there would be noise, there would be distraction," he told the BBC.

“In order to be able to do that [MPs] need to be able to sit down, and you can't always do that in standard class . . . and you also need quiet and sadly, you don't very often get that in standard class.

"They are a totally different type of people. There's lots of children, there's noise, there's activity. I like to have peace and quiet when I'm travelling."

What a contradictory statement.

Knob.

Although abuse of first class travel is pretty bad in the civil service when you get to a senior position. Ie short trips etc. They expect civil servants of certain grades to do work on trains in cattle class with guidelines on protecting information and data, why can't everyone do that? ;)

And 90% of the trains I've used on business have been fine. All standard class.

Exactly. I don't mind MP's spending a bit more money to go first class if they need to do work etc, and after all, they do run the country.

I don't really see why it contradictory. He needs peace and quite to work.

My only problem with this guy is he's stupid enough to say what he did. I also don't like arrrogance.

If they want first class transport they should pay the extra for it. I commute daily by bus and then train, plenty of people working away happily and that's not in first class - which is usually empty.

If he's incapable of working in standard class, then he's perhaps too simple minded for public office.

I take it you've tried to work with papers in a standard class coach?

Didn't think so. You can't do it. You can if you simply need a laptop, but I've seen MP's on adjecent tables and they've usually got all sorts of documentation etc etc.
