Hey guys, new here.

I'm fishing around for a new rig, and have pretty much settled on the ati 5770 + i5 750 route. However, I'm at a loss when it comes to PSU's and cases as I haven't built a system since way back in the geforce 5 days!

Anyway, here's a few things that I definitely need in the rig:

  • Mouse + Keyboard, preferably wireless for living room setup on the HDTV now and then.
  • Monitor - roughly 22", HDMI.

Don't need:

  • Speakers/Headdies
  • Blu Ray
  • SSD
  • More than one card - though I may add another ATI 5 range card in the future for crossfire, so a board that supports it would be nice.

Right, I know its a push at the price range I've given - I can possibly edge it by about £20.

Thanks for any help! I know these posts are probably the bane of your existence by now!
 
Oh! I suppose the other question is: Is it worth waiting out for a few weeks/months for price drops? I've read that they're in the wings for some of the new components, any ideas?

Depending on your needs, you could drop the Core i5 750 for a Core i3 530, and put the money you save towards a Radeon 5850.
 
If you're going crossfire later you might need a slightly stronger power supply.
A PCIe card by definition can only draw 300W max for it to be released, I hear engineering samples of fermi, for one, draws 280W.

So 300*2 + 200 for CPU/peripherals/HDD = 800W, but you don't really need that much. Maybe 700W or so
 
Oh, I forgot about Crossfire.

If you're going to crossfire, you'll need a motherboard that does x8/x8 PCI-E and not just x16/x4 like the one I specified above. You'll need to step up to a UD4 for that, which is going to add £50. 500W should be enough for dual 5770s (though I'd personally be happier with 600W), you definitely don't need 700W. My advice would be to drop the crossfire idea, drop the Core i5 to an i3 and get a Radeon 5850. You get comparable performance without having to get a better motherboard, saving on money and power usage.

You gonna use this primarily for gaming?
 
For gaming mainly yeah, possibly a bit of programming too in say Visual Studio, but nothing too intensive.

I could just drop the dual card idea - as I'd have no problem with just a single, I'm just a bit worried about having a core i3 and having to upgrade in a year or so.
 
The Core i3's fairly speedy, overclocks very easily, and since most games don't benefit from having 4 cores rather than 2, it might be a better buy now. You can easily upgrade later anyway, there's probably some 32nm Westmere quad-core chips making their way later this year.

Gaming is mostly GPU bound unless you play at low resolutions at 1024x768, so it's best to focus your limited budget into getting the best graphics card possible. The Radeon 5850 will easily munch through every title currently available.
 
I'm stretching it a bit here, and looking at the following setup. I want to get the OC'd kit as it has included OC warranty, but its just a little too much. (This is quite hard to write whilst laughing at the Tiger Woods apolology).

I would like to get a £200 G card but they're all out of stock. Let me know what you guys think anywho! I'm also thinking I can probably lower the PSU and HDD size a little for a bit of a cost reduction.

Total is 836, I've been a bit naughty. :D
 
Change your hard drive to the Samsung F3 I specced above, save £2 and it's the fastest 7200rpm SATA drive currently available :)

The Radeon 5850 - it depends on how much you value getting your card now as opposed to waiting a couple of weeks for new stock. If you're ready to spend £40 just to have it now, stick with the £250 by all means (and I suppose you get a free copy of AvP with it which reduces the overall cost).

Other than that, it's all gravy :D
 
Change that board, unless you still need old legacy stuff like parrallel port and com port?!?

Surely you'd rather have esata, optical output, more usbs :confused:
 
are you starting from scratch? because if you have a old system you could save cash on the hard drive and cd drive, also will you be needing windows? and what version will you go for 32 or 64 bit? vista or 7

I actually meant to select the one that you specced. My bad, thanks for spotting that one!

I think I may wait for the stock. Initially I was like "Hey, AvP, so it's not so bad!" but after playing it over a friend's.. .:o

I don't need windows as I have it free from my University luckily. I am unfortunately starting from scratch - don't have any DVD drives banging about which reminds me I didn't even get one in that spec!

Well I'm not 100% settled as there will be one or two things changing. However, I'd like to thank you guys for all your help! I was bloody clueless before this thread! :)
 
if you plan to crossfire make sure you actually get a motherboard which can atleast do 8x/8x

most the cheap ones only do 4x on the second card.
