Hi All,

Have quick question, my ati 3870x2 is showing its age, i am looking to upgrade.
I am thinking of either ati 5850 or 5870.

Bios to fix compatibility with ati 4870x2 cards not working on these boards has never been released due to Abit closing down its mobo side of the business.

Anyone knows will this board work with 5850 or 5870, or is this issue only related to 4870x2 series?

Cheers

I had a 4870x2 running fine on my IX38. Had to flick the little switch near the DVI connector end from PCI2.0 to PCI1.1 and it worked fine as thats what caused the incompatibility with the board.

Thanks m8, that`s interesting since this board supports pci x 2.0, can you elaborate more please?

IX38 and a Powercooler (I think its that 'brand') 5850 here. Got the 5850 at release and havent fiddled with the card's bios or needed too. Pretty sure I will have set my PCI bus speed to 101 back when I was originally oc'ing my cpu.

Had a few crashes during boot in the first week and the usual 5850 fan with a mind of its own stuff. But not a peep since then.

Think the board's bios is the last official one that was made available. It recognised the e5200 anyway.

supports PCIE 2.0 single GPU card solutions fine but the 4870x2 caused problems due to a BIOS issue hence it running fine in PCE1.1 mode and also why some 4870x2 manufacturers, eg Sapphire including the switch on the card, and to make it compatible with motherboards that only supported PCIE 1.1. It was claimed to be fixed in the "official" BETA BIOS 1.6 that was released to certain individuals (and can be found if you do a search) but by the time that appeared I had got rid of the card.

Cheers for the info, i have seen this bios version 16 at ***** forum, but i am still running version 12. Everything is running fine, i was thinking about updating it, but with abit being no more i am very careful with beta bios versions, cant afford fubaring the board at the moment as i cant afford buying new board, cpu and ram, if board goes fubar no point buying new 775 board, i would have/want to go i7 but at the moment i can only afford new gcard.

When i get 5850 or 70 i will update bios if i have to, but i am hoping it will all work fine as version 12 is really stable and clocks very easy.

My setup is very similar to yours

Same cpu, same ram, but i have only 4 gigs, and i am currently running 3870x2
