Thinking of sending 5970 back due to fan rattle and getting twin 5870's

Guys, I've got a sapphire 5970 I got this week, the fan noise itself is good but it rattles, seems like a problem these cards have.

I really like the card though, sure the drivers are a little lame in parts but the IQ is superb and its a good performer.

The noise is like a raptor constantly working hard and is very annoying, as the title says I'm thinking of RMAing it and getting 2 5870's, before I do does this fan rattle affect them?

Cheers
Fred

Fred, the fan on my Asus 5770 rattles occasionally but seems to smooth out at higher fan speeds. Have you tried altering the fan speed on the 5970 manually in CCC?

I've tried altering the fan speed and this noise starts once you get past 30%, it then persists all the way to 100%.

There is a lot of play on the fan and if you use fingertip pressure to just lift it whilst its spinning the noise stops instantly.

2 5870's for me I think

Yes, mine rattles too, was quite annoying. Doesn't seem to happen much rently.

Had my Sapphire 5970 for about 3 weeks now. No problems with it at all. runs quiet on auto Fan settings.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Your just as likely to get the fan rattling issue with the 5870 as all the 5xxxx series use the same fans lol and i wouldnt pay more for 2 5870s just to gain a liitle extra performance over a 5970, just return the card and get another one

i would definatly send it back for fixing or replacement, for the money they cost you need to be 100% satisfyed with your purchase

both my hd 5970 has fans that rattles occasionally. used to be more easy, but i tightened the screws slightly and push the fans slighty more in (not too much pressure) and most the rattlings gone.

though it still does when fan speeds are adjusted/increased then settles. but really all that is a minor inconvenience to the peformance these cards give.

So far this fan issue seems to affect only the 5970, they appear to use the same fans as the 5870 but ive not seen any 5870 users complain about fan rattle.

I've decided to keep this card, the fan noise seems to have settled down, I've not finished tweaking yet but it seems to like overclocking and I've sorted the idle temps which were around 60, increasing the airflow through my case by turning up the case fans a touch has dropped it down to mid 40's.

Hopefully Artic Cooling will have their Accelero Extreme available for this at some point in the next three months.

I actually only this PC for iRacing and at 5040x1050@76Hz, running with 8xaa and all the eye candy this is a really amazing card!

Thanks for all the feedback guys
Fred

good :)

also if you dont like the idle temps set the fans at 40-50% and save the catalyst profile, it still doesnt make that much noise
when gaming i have a catalyst profile that adjusts fan speed up to 70%.. noisy but with headphones and distracted by gaming its not so bad.

I think now I've started playing some gfx intensive games again, Battlefield bad company, my fan does begin to rattle a large amount. Although it's only showing as running at 49%. Extremely annoying. There's a huge number of forums where this is talked about, may try seeing if I can tighten up the fan screws - see if that helps. Really do not want to RMA.

I decided not to as I'm so pleased with the card, I will either watercool or get the Artic Cooling cooler thats being used for Sapphire for the 4GB 5970.

I ordered the Corsair Obsidian 800D for it all to live in today.
