Hoping for CPU, motherboard and memory and cheap but effective air cooler. Intel or AMD, doesn't matter. Will mainly be used for gaming, some video encoding and audio conversion. Looking to improve upon Q6600, Asus P5Q, 4GB 1066mhz DDR2... (still good performance but want some new toys!

Possible?

Got an HD4890@900/1100 and Q6600 G0 at 3.2GHz. I was looking at the Phenom II 550 and an Asus M4A79XTD (don't need onboard GFX else the M4A785TD-V looks good) Evo hoping to unlock cores and overclock. One or other PC will end up as a media centre anyway as I'm looking to shift the current one, E6300 paired with some primeval mATX board that doesn't overclock at all. Yes, I have the cash now, just about. :)

Any point, or should I not worry as the upcoming solar flare will render this technology useless, and invest in an axe and sharpening stone instead?

Absolutely no point in that CPU change, get a ati 5850 and put the rest of the money towards a crossbow.

I would get an SSD and not change anything else in the system unless you want to get a DX11 graphics card like an HD5830 or an HD5850. OTH,I assume you have a decent PSU.
