WHAT THE HELLL!!!!? Empire Total War + 1GB 4870 + Phenom II X4 955 ~ 3.2ghz

if 105 is the max safe temp and you're at 81 you're quite far off aint you..
Itll shut down when it gets to a critical temp will it not?

No I meant, the higher it runs, the shorter the life... I just wondered if 81-85 was considered a temp at which it would last a long time.

80-90C is the standard operating load temperature for the 48xx series.

I was worrying about this. Speedfan has an ambiguous 'Temp2' record that shoots up to the low 90's when running shizzle, and I was about half-convinced it was my 4890 sizzling away, but if that's normal I'm happy.

Yeah I just wanted to make sure. Thanks guys. Yeah I read on those 4890s, they just run hotter than the 4870s for obvious reasons, but the 48xx and 4890 series are meant to be really good.

I don't intend on upgrading to DX11 or another card for that matter until the DX11 Hype goes down an prices drop. Then I aim to find a card with far better performance than the 4870, but with the same longetivity in terms of it's use over a broad spectrum of older and newer games. I'm glad I got this 4870, still handles everything I throw at it. Good pick! :D

Ahhh problem...

Big battle... another one, I think it was for taking Quebec. Anyway... probably about 400 more troops maybe 60. More Buildings and trees in view this time, they had their fort / region capital and army hidden away... FPS 8.

WTF. Seriously. Sometimes it runs nice, sometimes it doesn't. Anyway I turned AA off and put AF on 2. Everything on HIGH, except units on Medium and Shadows Medium. Turn HDR and fog effects off. 30-50fps. I don't understand this game.

I read this game scales terribly on Nvidia cards as well, an some pretty beefy rigs. Is it me or do CA not know how to make games?

Question...

Would turning AA, AF, Volumetrics and HDR down/off save more FPS than changing from my native res of 1680x1050 to a lowere resolution of say... 1280x1024. (Note when I lower my resolution, things aren't crisp, there is a slight blur. This monitor, (Samsung Syncmaster 2032MW) has a refresh rate of 1680x1050 @ 60hz, no higher but lower resolutions allow higher refresh rates... is it safe to change it to say 75hz at a lower non native resolution?

I just want Empire looking good but to have consistently good FPS without having to keep tinkering with options, some times it runs nicely, sometimes it runs at a horrible 8-20fps. Rgh!

Less screen effects and less AA/AF or a lower resolution for best FPS boost?

Thanks

OK just changed it to high, with 1280x1024... fps was about 30-50... when before on ultra on the campaign map at 1680x1050 i was getting 70-100fps.

Now after changing settings in the main menu. 1380x1024 on high, 18fps... changed it back to 1280x1024, am getting 4-8fps.

There is a serious problem with this game. Any ideas how to get round this stupid ****er or not?

Ok, change settings to High and your normal res. Exit the game.
In the steam menu, right click ETW, properties and find the button the Verify Game Cache Integrity (or something like that). Then the Defragment files button.
Exit all programs (including antivirus and fraps), disconnect from internet.

Run the game. If it feels smooth then don't change anything.

If you load up programs again like your antivirus, and your game starts lagging again then you'll know there's some conflict going on.

However don't turn Fraps on. Not only does it make you all too aware and paranoid of your FPS, but I've noticed it has adverse affects in some games.

I appreciate the help but before I had steam running, AVG panel on but no scans running... Xfire (not fraps), an I ran ultra with high fps. then I go into a different battle considerably smaller than ones before and suddenly a huge chunk of FPS is gone.

What saves more FPS, dropping res from 1680x1050 or dropping effects and AA/AF?

Ahh well I'm running on 1280x1024... tad stretched, but looks ok, running on high. It'll have to do until I find an alternative setting. 1680x1050 medium, I don't really like. Rather have lower res, a slight blur on things with more detail than crisper more bland imagery.

Well the blur is not as blurry as say... Crysis would be when you do a similar thing... it's most noticeable on text. The only annoyance I'd say is the slight stretching effect. It truely is a shame that some of those resolutions didn't just end in 1050 instead of 1024... that'd maybe help slightly? Anyway if anyone finds me decent settings where I get about 35fps+ on a 1gb 4870 (Win 7 64 hp, 4gb 1600mhz corsair dominator DDR3, Phenom II X4 955BE 3.2Ghz ) that'd be helpful.

The load times are horrid and I've been tweaking those settings loads myself an I can't really find a great balance of overall quality and higher res without having to tone it down. I mean I get medium/high fps in most battles under 16x10 on ultra but sometimes it drops to 8-15fps in large battles, sometimes it doesn't. I'd just like a setting that never drops below 30, preferably 35 so I can just stick with it and not have to keep changing resolutions!

:D

playing through again and found it better than before. On vista64 i got a lot of crashes which was a pain. Im on win7 64bit now and haven't got a single crash yet. playing all on ultra settings with 2xaa 16xaf 1920x1200 and its playable woth my current system.

I'll just add my two cents to this thread. Empire is a resorce hog - or rather, the options for the game are. I think you will find it is the smoke in game that is causing the ridiculous frame rates. In fact, if you download Dathmod et al you will find that there are options to remove the smoke entirely. But your pc is fine, especially if it runs the other games perfectly.

thats pretty weird my cards weaker than yours and the game runs pretty smooth at 1920x1200 in battles with every thing maxed out except no aa and i turned of the super sampling stuff as that was killing my fps.

although on the campaign map i get slowdown some times and it goes away eventually but the battles are always smooth.

Imo its beyong a resource hog, and i don't buy the fog thing. It was released borked, and patches haven't resolved much for me.

Its borked on campaign level too tbh.

OP - Deal with it unfortunately, its the game.

I know it's the game... just don't quite understand why it performs so badly... probably the worst performing game of all time on release?

Sometimes I can run it at 16x10 on ultra with HDR an Volumetrix, Distortion and 4xAA, 16AF.... but just seems sometimes it performs differently on different battles for no reason, sometimes even if they are smaller.

AND AGAIN....

OK I'm annoyed...

Using Automatic settings... which is basically HIGH settings except HDR, Volumetric Effects and Distortion Effects are OFF but with AA disabled and AF as trilinear.

I went into a few battles and it was fine. But each battle and reload/return to the map dropped a few FPS (On to something here?). I didn't touch the settings when I noticed this. I went into a battle, and accidently highlighted everyone and pressed CTRL+W lol (done that twice now :@) and retreated everyone, but on return to that battle by loading the game again to the Campaign map, the FPS had dropped from about 50 to 30. I went out of the battle and reloaded to the Campaign map and retried the very same battle for the 3rd time! The FPS had dropped from 30 to 18fps. Note that this was in the deployment phase, when characters are idle and hardly anything is going on.

Considering how I could play on Ultra with all effects on except hardware shadows and SSAO, then there is some sort of "Leak" going on here... I think the dips in FPS per battle is a clear sign of this. Something is keeping something in cache/memory and then going into another battle is keeping more stuff loaded in there, and so on so forth until FPS dips and dips. I'm happy playing with no effects on and running everything on high, but with it dipping to low FPS ranges dependant on the number of battles then that is clearly unacceptable.

I was playing these games at 1680x1050 native (60Hz). I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 just to refresh your minds. I have 4GB of Corsair Dominator 1600Mhz DDR3, I have a 1GB XFX Radeon HD 4870 GDDR5, I have a 1010w Modular FSP PSU and I have a Stock Clocked AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2Ghz Quad Core (AM3) running at approx 40 degrees under load whilst in the game for a while. My motherboard is a ASUS Crosshair III Formula iRoG.

I know there is to be another patch for this game because I read up on it before the game had arrived in the post, but there needs to be some sort of optimization patch. I hope Napoleon doesn't result in the crappy half-arsed AI grouping patch to be the last one.

First Creative Assembly game I've had and so far, I am not impressed.

Apologies for any typos, I am tired. :P
