So this weekend i decided to build a 'rig'

I used what i already had, ie; the pole's, which are from an argos purchased 'cloth's tidy stand' (i had 2 packs)... i drilled these up so they could be attached together :)

I bought 2 x suction cups from SCREWFIX (not wicks sorry), £6.50 each, drilled holes through the handle and used 2 aerial brackets to secure the poles, the padding is an old mouse mat i cut up, lastly i stuck my hama monopod to the end.

My friend drew the short straw as he was the only one with a wide angle lens, so he was slightly nervious dangling his new 7D off the end, i told him its only a canon, 2 a penny lol.

Anyways, heres the kit and setup shots:

And the final shots:

Was good fun, but we came across a few problems, like the pole bending so all the shots are from a fairly low angle, im going to try and engineer a better system, for future shots.

Your friend must be pretty trusting :D

Great ingenuity, however I don't think you need such long exposures, 1 second max should create a cleaner effect.

As i said to him, its only a Canon.

Yeah, we learned a lot in 2 hours, one of them being exposure times, but we will go again, once ive modded my rig a little, i need to attach some cable to get the setup a bit stiffer (eww err) suspension bridge style.

Very good pics but wow you have some serious faith in those argos clothes poles, we had a set of those at home that kept falling apart with a heavy coat on it, let alone a 7D!!

Was the car pushed or being driven, if so what sort of speed?

Cheers.

^ Thx for your comments guys :D

@ GSXRMovistar, all the poles have been drilled and bolted so they can be attached together, so we were not relying on the plastic nuts that 'stop' the poles from slipping into each other ;)

1st piccy i was driving, very slowly, all the rest we pushed the car at walking pace.

Looking really good mate.

How hard/time consuming did you find it to clone out the pole?

Panzer

Cheers mate, not to bad on the cloning/processing....id say about 15-20 mins per picture.

EDIT: Suction cups are from Screwfix, not Wicks...sorry!!

Wedge needs to stop feeding you duff information ;)

Screwfix Linky

The camera in a few of the shots was only a matter of inches from the grass. Other times the camera was a bit scary at a couple of feet above concrete. I was wandering along with the camera holding the strap loosely so if it all fell off i could catch it.

We did shoot some photos of my car (mk3 mondeo) but they are naff. The car is the wrong shape and the poles slipped off my car more than 3 times so we decided not to continue. They stayed firmly on Wedge's car and wouldnt budge, the second they got near the "curves" of a mondeo they just went weak at the knees and fell off.

As for the 1 second exposures... its not do-able. There was no movement in the photos at 1 second as we was only pushing the car at a slow walking pace. 3 - 4 seconds was about right.

Wedge said the photoshopping took about 15-20mins per shot.

Haha I've got exactly the same stuff, minus the mouse pad. I've not managed to use it yet though as the longest pole I can fit in my car is 1.2m, which isn't long enough to get the whole car in.

Might have to look in to the clothes tidy stand :p

Edit: I got my suction cups from B+Q, after asking 3 different members of staff who all said they didn't stock anything like that.

We saw those, they were like 2/3 times the price :o (but they were the same ones)

Screwfix link above, cheers Chris ;)

Looks awesome!

Now I wonder if my bro will let me stick suction things to his Porsche :D

Great pics. Those suction pads are good, we use them at work for lifting glass that weighs up to 50kg so i'm sure itll handle a camera.

Edit: Actually they're different to the ones we use but I'd still imagine they are designed for lifting fairly heavy glass so will be great for this application.
