Imo she didn't deserve it.

No I don't really either, most people predicted she would solely because she is a female director directing what is essentially a war film.

I watch it for the whole show, all of the acceptance speeches and seeing the actors, as well as the actual awards.

Much better to watch it as it's broadcast in my opinion.

I'm not even a fan of Avatar but James Cameron deserved to win best director imo. He's pretty much invented the ability to shoot 3D live. Something that will be used for years to come.

Box office success doesn't necessarily constitute it as 'good' it just means it appealed to a wide target audience and was marketed very very well. Look at amazing films like A Prophet, The White Ribbon or even An Education and then compare their profits.

At the end of the day the film industry is a business, in particularly Hollywood.
