How big is your Win7 winsxs folder?

it's to keep compatibility after windows updates have been installed.

don't try and clear it out, you'll just harm your system

this is why I say Vista/7 need 40gb (32bit) and 50gb (64bit) partitions for the OS

Pretty sure that means how big is our winsxs folder.

Then thought as he knew what it was I thought I would ask what is it?

Not going to make a big deal of this, but your question had been answered already was my point! :p

It is such a shame that Windows reads the hardlinks as being the actual size of the file they point to. The filesize of the winsxs folder is likely much, much smaller than indicated, but since Windows can't tell the difference you have effectively lost that capacity! :(

5.85g on a 160g drive with a clean Win7 install barely 10 days old.
And there's hardly any programs & no games installed either, wth is backed up in there?

As said it is different versions of .dlls and other system files so software will work properly even if the OS updates them.

It would seem Windows is very quick to create the new versions but a bit slow to get rid of them after you have uninstalled software! I wouldn't worry about it to be honest. I suspect it will stop growing at some point! :p

Good to know, thank you :)

Mine is "only" 3.25GB on a 8GB hard drive. Have I inadvertently done something to reduce it? If so can I reduce it more, my HDD only has about 750MB free space, so it would be nice to free up a bit more. The install is about 3 months-ish old. I imagine when a big service pack update comes out I am going to be stuck anyway, but hoping that won't be for a while.

Why? According to windows my windows folder alone is 12GB but my entire windows install is only 10GB which includes program files and user profiles etc, so even though it reports the winsxs folder bigger than it actually is it doesn't actually lose you any space.
