Microsoft?

I think they messed up pretty bad with the 360. All the RROD problems cost them big time, and they wont live that down for a long time.

They already have lived it down and are doing amazingly well in the console market.

Even as a ps3 owner I can see that.

Microsoft will continue to be the big boy for a long time, the fact that most publishers make their content mostly even solely for Microsoft gives them a massive advantage over most competitors. At the end of the day I dont see why people have a problem with Microsoft, he done well good on him. Made PC's a lot more accesable for people who were not computer literate as well with a relatively simple windows program.

Tbh I dont really care about Microsoft /shrug

Case in point "applesoldier".
He's a loser. Mac Vs {brand may be competitor?} series are fantastic.

I have a PS3, most of my friends do. Not one of us games seriously on it. They all have 360s.

Yip I didnt even bother with the new PS. Though I may be tempted if the new FFis only released to a PS

I'm surprised nobody has said you can't right click on a Mac as Apple only ships one button mice. :)

I use Macs at home because I need a tool to do a job and it needs to do that job well. I don't care about the speed of the frontside bus or the clock-rate of the GPU (as long as it supports OpenCL I'm fine).

As for the OP's question. I wouldn't buy Microsoft stocks right now as they are still on a downer. Microsoft will flounder for a bit before getting fully back on their feet. They've shown they can turn around a good OS in Windows 7 and I should imagine Windows Mobile 7 will do the same for their mobile OS (Windows Mobile 6 is bloody awful).

Meanwhile please can we stop the pointless Microsoft / Apple bickering as it is tiring to see that same diatribe crop up in any thread talking about OS's or Microsoft. Oh and I'm talking to both sets of fanbois

Oh yay this tired, boring old debate again!

Why do you people bother? The Apple fans will never be turned away, and the MS fans have already grown up! You are never going to agree!

I like Apple stuff, I like MS stuff. They both have their place. I own an iPhone and am looking to buy a Macbook Pro. I also own a high-end Windows gaming rig and a Windows server. Different tools for different jobs. [Though I must point out that Jobs is a tool.]

If I had to do something as laughable and pointless as "pick a side" I would go with MS, simply because Windows can do everything and supports virtually everything. If OSX could match that then I am sure I would be just as happy with an Apple machine.

Windows 7 is great. OSX is great. What's the problem?

I've lost track, are we talking about Apple or MS now?

The opening post was about Microsoft but as per usual in GD it's turned into the "You cannot do anything on an overpriced and shiny Apple" rotuine :(

. Different tools for different jobs.

Exactly. Seeing as I work as a System Admin I'm not going to pick OS X* to run the server environment when, for us, the right tool is VMware and Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

However outside of work I fall into the Apple camp. I like the way they look, I like the way they perform and they have all the tools I need to get things done.

* However OS X server is stunningly brilliant for SME's who want LDAP, Mail, Calendars and much more and due to OS X server coming with unlimited client access licenses it would save a fortune. It even provides all that to Windows!! :D

The thing about apple is that no matter what they release everyone loves it, whether its crap or not.

Anyone remember the ad for the iphone

"you can copy and paste"

WOW REALLY I SAID! Everyphone before it could have done that, and it took them 3 versions to be able to even do that!

But..but. it has an i in the name :(:p

I really hate the fact they want everything to be thinner for some reason, i can see a point in it to an extent but who (outside of an apple fanboy) is going to care that this years imac is thinner to an extent you need a digital gauge to measure the difference?

I've got many gripes with Microsoft, but not for the "usual" things. I strongly dislike their patronising attitude to the developer market, and also their sometimes seemingly inept ability to actually know what developers want.

Also, as a company, Microsoft sit back in terms of technological advancement. They really could have improved things a lot more, and a lot quicker, but I guess they are just a slow boat to turn around.

*Everybody* knows that Microsoft have got where they are due to a mix of corporate politics, monopolisation (and market bending), eradicating the opposition (instead of just improving themselves, they buy the opposition, and subsequently dismantle/assimilate) and clever marketing. I think the latest adverts of "I'm a PC and Windows 7 was my idea!" adverts really let that last point shine.. "Really, you want things to 'just work'? Why didn't anyone think of this before?!"

But that would have come at the cost of legacy hardware and thousands of people going OMG Microsoft broke my computer!!!

Ok Philip and digi, if MS are so rubbish then who should replace them?

I can't think of any other operating system/company that could.

Apple:eek::p

M$ are good at what they churn out ie operating systems and office applications...its as simple as that.

I dont get the M$ hate sometimes....Gates hopped on something and it went way beyond his expectations i would imagine...plus kudos to the guy for his tireless charity work...doesnt he contribute a silly amount of his wealth to charities or something??.

As for buying shares??..id buy if they were low enough but they arent.

Thing about Microsoft of late is they've stopped focusing on their core business and started somewhat blindly in my opinion trying to get into other markets. Look how much they are willing to be on Yahoo in order to "compete" with Google. Same with the smart phone market. They have happily sailed along with Windows Mobile 6 doing OK and all of a sudden Apple appears and Microsoft must be in the smart phone market to win. It's like Balmer has blinkers on or something...

At least with Windows 7 they've realised that it's OEM OS licenses and HOMA agreements that make them money and have focused on that for a while Sure the adverts are dire but then Microsoft adverts always have been (look on YouTube for the SingStar advert!). perhaps they should call Audi or Apple's ad agency. :)

Can OSX play BluRay?

Yep

The majority of games? :p

Got my XP install for that! :p

Actually, this is what mac users always say.

How about you give us an example of something your mac can do that a windows machine can't? :p

Well I can't and don't need to.*Someone said OSX is limiting and not very good so I said, give me an example of something Windows cannot do in comparison to OSX. It wasn't said the other way round :p

That's because their mice can right click :) Have been able to since the Mighty Mouse :) - Although the Apple mice do indeed suck balls :p - Haven't tried their new one though..

Not even remotely. And besides which, Microsoft are not well known for backwards compatibility. I had to work on a team for a bank that spent 12 months finding suitable replacements/upgrades for off-the-shelf applications when migrating from NT4 to XP. In the region of 12,000 applications, of which only a small percentage (roughly 20%) that didn't need anything changed.
