Sorry folks,

I need to build a new PC for my business accounts etc.

I already have spec in sig for my main rig. Dont mind swapping things around to upgrade my existing PC.

I'd prefer Intel i7 needs to be raid(?) for data security/Loss

I have monitor and a corsair hx620 psu And i dont need GFX

I dont really have a budget either, it needs to work and keep my data safe from loss(dont fancy doing last 3 yrs accounts again) If i can do it for £400 great, If it needs to be £700 then so be it.

Thanks Folks.

Matt

i doubt you'd really need the i7 for doing the accounts tbh

I think both of the above spec'd setups are overkill for accounting. This will do the job perfectly.

I would modify this list of components by swapping out the X2 255 for an X3 435 or X3 440 for around the same price.

The OP should also consider whether 8GB of RAM would be needed for their work or not.

those athlon II x3's are strong chips i've used them in builds before and they perform well, i just have a habit of forgetting they exist lol

@op: what programs will this system be used for?

He will probably use Microsoft Office Word....thats what most people use for accounting so thats why I suggested the X2 255 and I also used what was available on OCUK and X3 435 or X3 440 aren't available on OCUK.If he finds them somewhere else for the same price as a X2 255 then he should get one.

most likely, was just wondering though whether there were any other programs he uses at his business on a day to day basis that might need more grunt :)

Thanks Guys.

I've always been a Intel fanboy so would prefer to stick with intel. i7 is prob overkill. Just thinking about the future But as the i3 is sooo much cheaper I may go down that route.

As for the software its only going to be sage etc. BUT. I own a small courier company (14 drivers) and I am expanding to may need some routing and PDA software in the future. Routing software can be fairly slow if the hardware isnt up to it.

4gb would be plenty but may as well get 6gb if the price aint much different.

Ive built a fair few PC's over the years but been so busy with work the last 12 months or so I'm waay outa touch with the latest goings on jumped for a i7 920 as that is what i have in my other PC and its great (again prob overkill)

Ooh forgot to mention i could do with a quiet case thinking about a 300

If i can get it for £400 then great i may may use my NEC24" for the work PC and get myself a 30 for my main PC

AM3 is also future proof and may be more future proof than Intel and I don't see any reason for you to spend the extra 300 hundred quid on an i7 setup. That will be a total overkill...like buying a Lambo and driving it under 60mph all the time.:D You will be able to buy a new case and still be under 400 quid. The CoolerMaster 335 Elite is an excellent case for this setup.I don't think a DDR2 board will help saving money because DDR2 has almost the same price as DDR3.

Thats why I asked for advice. I sometimes go for what i know. And would end up spending way too much. Hopefully you guys can/have saved me from spending too much.

However can I be awkward and stick with Intel for the CPU I have an ATI GFX so I'm not opposed to AMD just never tried their CPU's.

My head hurts trying to catch up on what Ive missed whilst I blinked

AMD CPUs are very good and offer the best bang for buck right now especially the low-end ones. The only Intel processors that are better than the X2 255 and around the same price range are the i3s but those are on sk1156 which isn't going to see any future CPU releases so its not future proof. So the suggested setup is the best one for your business accounts.

I would expect that to do you just fine, I'm guessing you'll be running XP Pro, due to the software you'll be wanting to run.

in which case a 4gb ram + dual core setup will be plenty for a small business. 500gb Hard drive a nice plus :)

Also in the future, if you ever felt the need, the socket is 775 so you could swap out for a nice Quad core Q6600, and the motherboard also support 16x PCI express, So theres room to put in a nice graphics card. Again, if you ever feel the urge

Raid is not a backup. No form of raid is a backup. It's designed to avoid down time in the event of a disk failure, sometimes with the side effect of improving performance. Suggest you back up to a second hard drive or ideally somewhere offsite.

Cheers folks

Ive ordered the Primo I know I wanted future proof but for the price stuff it. plus in 12 months i can stick it in the loft as a NAS/backup drive

I'll be running Win7 so its completly compatible with the rest of my home network.

The software I'm using is also win7 compatible.
