Back with a Vengeance.
Basically a pal of mine is looking to change his car and is looking for ideas, so I thought you lot would provide some interesting choices.
In the past, he's had e46 M3 cabbie, 911 carerra 4, Rx7 twin turbo etc etc and recently he was offered a swap for his Range Rover for an RS6 but the guy has decided he didn't want a Range Rover and promptly called the deal off .....My mate also uses the extremely dangerous word "different" when describing what he's looking for, and I know he's test driving an e46 M3 coupe this weekend, but I thought there must be something better than that, so here's the brief.

£18k absolute max limit to spend on one car only.
Must return something remotely sensible in the MPG stakes. Avg. around 20-25 ish?
Must be practical to be a daily driver (and reliable enough to be one too!)
Doesn't need four doors, and doesn't really need more than two seats, but I'd like suggestions to cover all bases so he can make his own mind up on that one.....he is after all coming from a Range Rover so almost everything will seem small anyway.

So, the torch is passed over to you. I'll be interested to read any siggestions that I hadn't thought of.

Hmm, how about something like the Covette C5 ? ...they are actually surprisingly economical when driven sensibly, I'm sure Lashout will be here soon to link you a load of pictures and videos of much better ones than the one I linked.

I know your friend has owned all sorts of "hot" car's, but don't RS6's cost an absolutely obscene amount of money to run?

Well, I know they're not exactly cheap to run, but he rarely keeps a car over a year so mechanical breakages aside it shouldn't be too painful.

He mentioned evo9's to me today so you might be onto something. I suggested looking for another RS6.

RS6 running costs are absolutely insane apparently.

Sure fox mentionned something like regular several thousand pound gearbox rebuilds or something equally scary.

i know it doesnt fulfill the MPG criteria, but there isnt much under 18k better than an M3 whilst still being reasonable to run.

Mercs are nice, like this E55 AMG for example

but will probably feel "wafty" for somebody used to M3s, 911s and RX7s. But then he's had a range rover. Curious your mate is :D

if he's given up the RangeRover because its too wafty, he's probably not going to want a merc then.

Update.

The RR has been sold, and he went to test drive a private sale of a Beemer 335.
60k miles and a good price, with full dealer service history.....or so the seller said. After checking the car out it turns out that it's had a haircut of approx 100k miles, and the dealer it's supposed to have visited half a dozen times has never seen the car at all.
Back to the drawing board.

What about a Lotus Carlton? He could also consider a Caterham R500. Failing that, has he considered a '10 plate Focus Econetic? Then there is the oddball choice - what about a VW Transporter TDI?
