i5-430m vs - i5-520m

Ok actually I lie, didnt look at it in that much depth, only checked out reviews. Just a question, whats the importance of the wPrime 32 and wPrime 1024, as I see those are the two that differentiate the most between the 430 and 520. Thanks

They are testing programs that test how fast the CPU can calculate data.

Its a very small download I suggest that you download it and run it on your current PC to see how them CPU's compare

I haven't purchased the laptop yet... I was asking what the wPrime 32/1024 test.. so where would i see a difference in performance if i was using the computer on a day to day business. Wouuld it be when rendering an image, playing HD content, multitasking, etc.

Bassically it runs 2 tests

Test 1 calculates the square root of the first 32 million integers

Test 2 You guessed it the first 1024 million intergers

Lol ok ok I get it.. but why is this important. In a real world, I wont be sitting here trying to compute big numbers for fun. I'll be, for example, using BBC iPlayer HD, using a web browser, designing stuff in Photoshop, watching the a live feed of Bloomberg, listening to Spotify.

So.. what do these numbers tell me about how the CPU would run in these 'normal' situations. It's all great testing the CPU but I won't be testing it all day, so its cool to know that the test shows x,y and z, but what does that therefore go on to suggest?

:) Muchos gracias!

Query: If it tests how fast the CPU can calculate data, why does the 430m come first in both of the comparisons, with wP 32 and 1024. Surely the 430m should be slower than the 520m

Normal to you is not normal to the guy sat next to you. Everybody uses there PC for different uses.
You for example require very litle CPU power so basically core i3 would probably be plenty for your stated requirements.
However somebody that like to rip and encode DVDs and movies would benifit from the faster processors.

Personally I find that when I am looking for a new PC I set the budget and find the best hardware for the £'s that I am spending. Always go for the fastest that your alloted budget can get. There is nothing more frustrating than buying the slowest PC you can get away with only to find that you need something faster in 6 months time.

If you let me know how much you want to spend I would be more than happy to have a look around the deals and see whats good value for you.

Sweet. Well I'm looking for a laptop to start off with. Would like to spend £600-£650 max. I'll be using the laptop as a desktop replacement and a laptop, so I'd like a 1080p so I can watch HD stuff. Doesn't need to have Blu-ray though. Will be multitasking a lot with things in the background, word, excel, smartdraw, photosop, videos, (all at the same time).

Thanks btw, really appreciate the help.

I would suggest that you look at 3 in particular

Sony Vaio E Series
HP Pavillion DV6
Acer 5740 or 5740G (the G is just under £700 but it has a nice GFX if you intend to play any games)

If these are not to your liking let me know and will have another look for you

EDIT: I forgot to add that the Sony can be configured so you can tweak the hardware to suit your requirements better if you so wish

Without a doubt go for the acer 5740g. Its coming out soon and has the best bang for buck on any laptop ive seen. Ive spent hours searching the internet for the best value laptop.

Its got an I3 with ati 5650 but in those tests the i5 isnt that much faster and imo not worth the extra 50 quid. Ive currently got an aver with a t5250 1.55 ghx processor. Its lasted me a few years, no noticable slow down. So i dont see why an i5 is worth the money. Its only got 15% average better benchmarks than the i3 anyway, to me its not worth it. With windows 7 being optimised and automatically defrags then imo a faster processor isnt needed as weve reached the stagr with i3's that its not necessary for day to day use.

What about a Dell Studio 15? With the upgraded screen. comesi n @ £590... with an i5... 430m

edit: Dell: £598 inc delivery vs. sony £749 (not sure if this is inc/ex delivery).. for the same spec laptop as far as cpu, ram, hdd space. sony cant have 1080 screen without the gou upgrade so tis a 4570 (dell) vs. 5470 (sony).
